| Typical Conditions | A mild, often grey autumn morning in central Essex. Expect around 13C (55F) at the 09:00 start, easing into the mid-teens by late morning, with high humidity and a real chance of light rain or a breeze through the open country lanes. Classic damp English October running weather. |
What to Prepare: Dress for low-to-mid teens Celsius and pack a light layer or throwaway top for the start - it can feel cool in Central Park before the sun is up. This is a road course, so normal road shoes are ideal; save the trail shoes. With the gentle undulations, run by feel early and you will have plenty left for the closing miles.

Wind at 25.3 km/h can affect your marathon pace by 5-15 seconds per kilometer. Headwinds slow you down exponentially — a 20 km/h wind costs more than twice a 10 km/h wind.

| Profile | A gently undulating road marathon rather than a flat or a hilly one. The single lap opens on the tree-lined avenues of Central Park, then heads out onto rolling rural Essex country lanes before returning to the park to finish. There are no major climbs, but the steady rises mean it is not a dead-flat PB track. |

Use Calculator →The Chelmsford Marathon is a single-lap road course that starts and finishes in Central Park in Chelmsford, Essex. Runners set off along the park's tree-lined avenues, then head out onto the surrounding rural Essex country lanes before looping back to finish in the park. The course is accurately measured on tarmac roads, with eight water and aid stations and selected pacers along the way.
It is best described as gently undulating - not flat, but not hilly either. The route through Central Park and the open country lanes has steady rises rather than any big climbs, so most runners rate it a moderate, runnable road marathon. It is a little harder than a pancake-flat course but far easier than a trail or mountain race. Plan your effort with our pace calculator and preview the rolling sections with our elevation profile tool.
Yes. Because the Chelmsford Marathon is run on an accurately measured road course, it is regularly used as a Good For Age (GFA) qualifying event for the London Marathon, and a road-certified, accurately measured finish is also valid for Boston qualifying (BQ). Check the time you need for your age group with our Good For Age tool, then use the race time predictor to see if you are on track.
This is a road marathon on tarmac through Central Park and surfaced country lanes, so normal road running shoes are the right choice - the same ones you would wear for a city marathon. There is no need for trail shoes. If rain is forecast for the October race day, a pair with reliable grip on wet tarmac is worth considering, but standard cushioned road shoes will serve most runners well.
Entry is open to the public online through Nice Work Race Management (nice-work.org.uk), with no ballot. Advance entry for the marathon starts at around 54 GBP, rising toward roughly 69 GBP closer to race day, with on-the-day entry about 60 GBP subject to availability. The race is run in aid of Havens Hospices, and many runners take a charity fundraising place. It is a popular event, so enter early.
The marathon starts at 09:00 on Sunday 11 October 2026 from Central Park, using wave starts shared with the half marathon. There is a 6-hour overall time limit - if you expect to take longer, the organizers ask you to contact them in advance. The event village in Central Park has the usual race-day facilities, baggage and post-race support.
Chelmsford sits in central Essex, about 30-40 minutes by train from London Liverpool Street, and Central Park is a short walk or taxi from Chelmsford railway station - making this one of the more accessible UK destination marathons. Most runners travel in on the day or stay overnight in Chelmsford; the city has hotels and guesthouses close to the start, and London is easily reachable for international visitors.
