What to Prepare: Mid-May mornings on the lakefront usually start around 50°F / 10°C and warm toward 58–65°F / 14–18°C by midday, often with a lake breeze and a chance of light rain. Dress for a cool start with a throwaway top layer you can shed, and expect humidity off the water.

Wind at 21.4 km/h can affect your marathon pace by 5-15 seconds per kilometer. Headwinds slow you down exponentially — a 20 km/h wind costs more than twice a 10 km/h wind.

| Profile | A Great Lakes city marathon that runs flat-to-gently-rolling — about +619 ft (188 m) of total gain over 26.2 miles — with a few short hills (notably the climb up into the historic Tremont neighborhood) and several bridge approaches rather than any sustained mountains. The full-marathon route was redesigned for 2026 and returns for 2027: it starts downtown by the Mall, tours the city core past Public Square and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on the Lake Erie waterfront, crosses the Cuyahoga River on the landmark Hope Memorial Bridge, and winds through west-side neighborhoods such as Tremont, Ohio City, Gordon Square and the Lakewood/Edgewater lakeshore before finishing back downtown. The organizers adjust the exact route between years, so confirm the current course map. It is USATF-certified and an official Boston qualifier, and the cool mid-May conditions plus a forgiving overall profile make it a realistic Midwest BQ or PR target. Note: GPS watches over the bridges can show inflated elevation, so trust the certified profile over your device. |

Yes. The Cleveland Marathon course is USATF-certified and an official Boston qualifier — runners who hit the Boston Marathon qualifying standard for their age and gender at Cleveland can use the time to apply. Its flat-to-rolling terrain and cool mid-May weather make it a credible Midwest BQ option. Check your number with our Boston qualifying calculator.
It is flat-to-gently-rolling, not pancake-flat. Total elevation gain is about 619 ft (188 m) across the full 26.2 miles, with the course mostly between 576 and 682 ft, so you get a few short hills — notably the climb into the Tremont neighborhood — plus bridge approaches, rather than any sustained mountains. The lakefront and neighborhood streets reward even pacing — plan it with our pace calculator.
The full marathon was redesigned for 2026 and returns for 2027. It starts downtown by the Mall, tours the city core past Public Square and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on the Lake Erie waterfront, crosses the Cuyahoga River on the Hope Memorial Bridge, and winds through west-side neighborhoods such as Tremont, Ohio City, Gordon Square and the Lakewood/Edgewater lakeshore before finishing back downtown. The organizers adjust the exact route between years, so check the official course map for the current 2027 details.
Registration for the 50th-anniversary 2027 race is open now at clevelandmarathon.com. Early-bird pricing has already sold out, so the current standard full-marathon fee is $100 (plus processing); pricing is tiered and rises closer to race day, so register early. Note there are no refunds or deferrals. Confirm the live rate on the official site before you sign up.
The full marathon has a 7-hour course time limit from the 7:00 a.m. start. That works out to roughly a 16:00 per mile average pace, which is generous enough for first-timers and walk-run finishers while keeping the course open through the morning.
Mid-May in Cleveland is typically cool and lake-influenced: starts near 50°F / 10°C, warming to about 58–65°F / 14–18°C by late morning, with humidity off Lake Erie and a chance of a lake breeze or light rain. It is generally favorable marathon weather — dress for a cool start with a layer you can throw away.
Official results are posted on the Cleveland Marathon website and through its timing partner shortly after race day. In 2026 more than 13,000 runners took part across the weekend's distances, with full-marathon, half-marathon, 10K and 5K results published per event.
