Frequently Asked Questions

When and where is the Toyama Marathon 2026?

The Toyama Marathon 2026 is held on Sunday, November 1, 2026, with a 9:00 AM gun start. It is a point-to-point course that begins in Takaoka City and finishes at Fugan Canal Kansui Park in central Toyama City, running along Toyama Bay with the Tateyama mountain range on the horizon.

How do I enter the Toyama Marathon, and is there a lottery?

There is no lottery: general entry is first-come, first-served, so spots can fill before the deadline (the resident pre-entry slots sold out in hours in past years). Registration opens in April through the official site and RUNNET, and the full-marathon entry fee is 14,000 yen. Use our race time predictor to set a realistic goal before you sign up.

What is the time limit and is the course beginner-friendly?

The time limit is a generous 7 hours (you must clear the 41.6 km checkpoint by 15:59), one of the more relaxed cutoffs among major Japanese marathons, which makes Toyama a good first marathon or comeback race. The course is mostly flat aside from the Shin-Minato Ohashi bridge climb, so plan your effort with our pace calculator to bank time on the flat sections.

Is the Toyama Marathon a Boston-qualifying race?

Yes. The course is certified by the Japan Association of Athletics Federations (JAAF / 日本陸連公認), so an official chip time can be used for Boston Marathon qualifying, provided you meet your age-group standard. Check where you stand with our Boston qualifying calculator.

What is the Shin-Minato Ohashi bridge section like?

The Shin-Minato Ohashi is one of the Sea of Japan coast's largest cable-stayed bridges; its upper roadway deck is normally closed to pedestrians (a lower-deck pedestrian promenade stays open year-round), so race day is one of the only chances to run across the road span. It is the course's biggest climb, but the summit rewards you with a sweeping panorama of Toyama Bay and, on clear days, the snow-capped Tateyama Alps. In severe weather the bridge may be replaced by a non-certified alternate route.

Do I need a visa or travel authorization to run as a foreign visitor?

Many nationalities (US, UK, EU, Australia and others) can enter Japan visa-free for short tourist stays; confirm your own nationality's requirement before booking. Japan does not currently require an ESTA or eTA. Toyama is reachable by Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo in about two hours, making a race-weekend trip straightforward.

What is the weather usually like in early November?

Early November on the Sea of Japan coast is cool and changeable, often 9-15C at the start with a chance of brief coastal showers and a bay breeze. It is comfortable running weather, but pack a throwaway layer for the start line and be ready for shifting conditions on the exposed bridge.
