What to Prepare:

The numbers above are a 20-year climatology. What bites on this course is the wind, not the heat. Bag check closed at 6:27 AM for the 2026 edition's 7:00 AM gun and the 2027 timings are not out yet, so budget for roughly half an hour standing in the corral and carry a throwaway layer. The Liberty State Park stretch has no shade and no wind shelter, and full marathoners run it twice — the second pass lands late morning, when the field has thinned out and there is no one to draft off. Overcast and calm is genuine PR weather here.

Wind Impact on Race Day

Wind at 25.4 km/h can affect your marathon pace by 5-15 seconds per kilometer. Headwinds slow you down exponentially — a 20 km/h wind costs more than twice a 10 km/h wind.

Course Profile

Course TypeTwo-lap city loop (USATF classification: complex of loops)
TerrainRoad, 100% paved city streets and park roads
Profile

USATF-certified course NJ23007DB, measured by Dan Brannen and valid through 2033. The certificate classifies it as a complex of loops rather than a simple double lap: start and finish both sit at 3 m above sea level, the low point is 2 m, the high point 21 m, the drop is 0.00 m/km and start-to-finish separation is 0.14%.

Zero net drop matters for Boston hopefuls: the BAA adds a time index to qualifying times run on courses with a net downhill of 1,500 ft (457.2 m) or more, and this one is nowhere near that. Cumulative climb, though, has no authoritative value: the organiser's own interactive course map shows 140 ft, its official GPX works out to 412 ft unsmoothed, and the widely-copied findmymarathon figure is 383 ft (116 m) — the same course, three numbers, a 2.9x spread. Cumulative gain is an artefact of how each tool smooths GPS noise; the USATF certificate above measures endpoints and extremes instead, which is why it is the number to trust.

The full marathon covers two laps in the organiser's wording; the half splits off at 4th Street and runs straight to the finish. Both laps share the southern Liberty State Park loop and the finish corridor, but lap two runs that park section in the opposite direction and adds downtown blocks the first lap never touches (street sequence per the organiser's 2026 turn-by-turn; no 2027 map published yet). Entry is first-come, not a lottery, and both distances sold out in 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the 2027 Jersey City Marathon?

Sunday, April 18, 2027, with a 7:00 AM gun for both the marathon and the half. The half marathon finish line closes at 11:00 AM and the full marathon finish line at 1:30 PM. One warning: the race's own website was still carrying 2026 content as of late July 2026, so take the date and start time from the organiser's RunSignUp listing rather than the homepage.

When does registration open, what does it cost, and will it sell out?

Registration opens August 7, 2026 at 12:00 AM EDT, midnight going into Friday, with the marathon and half opening at the same moment. Opening prices are $170 for the full and $130 for the half; the struck-through $225 and $180 beside them are RunSignUp compare-at labels, not the previous rung on a price ladder: across the whole 2026 cycle those two figures never moved while the real price climbed from $190 to $230 for the full and $150 to $170 for the half — the full even finished above its own $225 anchor. No price-increase schedule has been published for 2027.

Don't leave it to the final weeks: both distances sold out in 2026 (an archived snapshot from March 6, 2026 shows each marked Sold Out), and marathon finishers grew +20.1% in 2024 and +29.9% in 2025 but only +3.1% in 2026, from 1,934 to 3,111 across four editions (MarathonGuide) — flattening growth on top of a sellout is what a field at its ceiling looks like. The organiser has never published an entry cap.

One caution: this opening date has already moved twice (July 31, then August 1, then August 7), so check the listing again the day before.

Is the Jersey City Marathon a Boston qualifier?

Yes, and the calendar lines up. The course is USATF-certified, and the BAA has confirmed that the 2028 qualifying window opens September 19, 2026 and stays open through 2028 Registration Week in September 2027 — an April 18, 2027 finish sits inside it.

The 2028 standards are unchanged from 2027: 2:55:00 for men 18-34 and 3:25:00 for women 18-34, with every bracket from 18 to 59 running 5 minutes faster than the 2020-2025 standards and 60+ unchanged.

There is a structural advantage here too. Qualifying times run on net-downhill courses now carry an adjustment when you submit them: +5:00 for a drop of 1,500-2,999 ft, +10:00 for 3,000-5,999 ft, and courses dropping 6,000 ft or more are not accepted at all. The BAA has said these indexes may be adjusted before the 2028 registration period, so treat the exact figures as provisional. It changes nothing here either way: this course's USATF-certified drop is 0.00 m/km, far inside the exemption, so a time run here is submitted exactly as you ran it.

Is a qualifying time here enough to get into Boston?

Usually not on its own. There is no cutoff published in advance, and the line moves every year with application volume: it landed at 4:52 under the standard in 2019, 5:29 in 2024, 6:51 in 2025 and 4:34 in 2026. Treat roughly 5 to 6 minutes under your standard as the real target, not the standard itself.

A second door is opening, though. Qualifier registration for 2027 runs September 14-18, 2026 — a five-day application window, as in recent years — and what is genuinely new for 2027 is a draw: roughly 1,000 qualifiers whose times did not beat the cut-off will be selected at random for entry. It runs for the first time this September, so there is no track record yet, and the BAA has not said whether 2028 will keep it. Either way, merely meeting the standard is no longer an automatic rejection.

That reframes this race's headline number. The 16.8% of 2026 finishers who ran a qualifying time (findmymarathon.com, raw age-group standards, no cutoff applied) includes a large group who would have needed either a bigger buffer or that draw. Check your standard and your buffer.

How flat is the course, really?

Flat by official measurement: the USATF certificate records start and finish at 3 m, a low of 2 m, a high of 21 m and a drop of 0.00 m/km. Cumulative climb, by contrast, has no authoritative number: the organiser's interactive map says 140 ft, its own GPX computes to 412 ft, findmymarathon says 383 ft — a 2.9x spread on one course, because every tool smooths GPS noise differently.

Flat is not the same as fast, though — the same site rates this the 180th fastest marathon course in the US and second-fastest in New Jersey (findmymarathon's own ranking, as of mid-2026). The more telling number: over four editions the field grew about 61% while the average finish time dropped from 4:13:17 to 3:59:21 (MarathonGuide), so the runners showing up here are increasingly chasing times.

What is the race day time limit?

The full marathon finish line closes at 1:30 PM, 6 hours 30 minutes after the 7:00 AM gun; the half marathon finish line closes at 11:00 AM. There are no fixed mile cutoffs. The organiser enforces a rolling maximum of 15 min/mile, with a trail vehicle collecting anyone who falls behind it. The organiser spells that allowance out only for the half marathon, and its own worked example lands exactly on the posted close — a runner starting at 7:30 AM has until 11:00 AM, not a minute more. The full marathon's 1:30 PM is a wall-clock close. Runners picked up by the vehicle still get post-race food and swag but may be recorded as DNF.

What is the two-lap course actually like?

Not a simple repeat. Both laps cover the southern Liberty State Park section (Morris Pesin Drive, Burma Road) and the same finish corridor on Washington Boulevard, but the second lap threads downtown streets the first lap never touches — Newark Avenue, Erie Street, Barrow Street, Bright Street. The half marathon splits off at 4th Street and heads straight in. In 2026 aid came every 2 to 3 miles, with water at every station, Gatorade Endurance at every other one, medical and restrooms at all of them, and Gu at mile 18; the 2027 plan is not published yet. Grand Street is the organiser's suggested spectating spot away from the finish.

How do I get to the start, and how does bib pickup work?

Take the PATH train to Pavonia/Newport, which the organiser lists as the closest station to the start; a ride is $3.25 (Port Authority fare, checked July 2026 — the organiser's own page still quotes the older $2.75).

The organiser's published race-morning timeline (2026 edition) has runners on site by 6:00 AM, bag check closing at 6:27 AM and corrals filled by 6:45 AM across 8 corrals, with 18th Street closed to eastbound and southbound traffic from 4:00 AM.

Bibs are handed out at the pre-race expo. The organiser's main wording is that none are available on race morning, though the same page elsewhere tells anyone who bought a race-day pickup option to arrive around 5:00 AM — two official statements that contradict each other, so go by the option you actually bought. Someone else can collect your bib only by showing your own confirmation email; the organiser's wording is 'no email, no bib, no exceptions'. The 2027 expo dates and venue have not been announced.
