What to Prepare: Late April in Louisville is pleasant but humid — expect a start around 62°F / 17°C climbing toward the low 70s°F (low 20s°C) by late morning, ~76% humidity, and a roughly 1-in-3 chance of rain. Dress for the early chill but plan for sun and humidity in the back half; carry your own electrolytes if you sweat heavily.

Wind at 19.5 km/h can affect your marathon pace by 5-15 seconds per kilometer. Headwinds slow you down exponentially — a 20 km/h wind costs more than twice a 10 km/h wind.

Use Calculator →Registration is open and first-come — there is no lottery. Sign up online through RunSignUp, where the standard full-marathon entry is around $150. The Derby Festival typically runs occasional discount windows (such as a one-day Global Running Day promotion), so registering early both locks in your spot and can save money. Note the full marathon is open to runners aged 14 and up.
Yes. The course is USATF-certified and an official Boston Marathon qualifier, and you do not need a qualifying time to enter — registration is open to everyone. A relatively small share of finishers run a BQ each year (about 5% in 2026), reflecting that this is a flat-but-honest course rather than a pure downhill time-trial.
It is a mostly flat course with roughly 153 m (about 500 ft) of total elevation gain. The one real challenge is the climb through Iroquois Park near mile 11, which reaches the highest point in Louisville before the long, gentle return toward downtown. GPS watches often over-count climbing on rolling park roads, so don't be alarmed if your device reads higher than the official figure.
The route is built around Louisville's signature sights. You run through the Churchill Downs infield — home of the Kentucky Derby and its iconic twin spires — past the Victorian mansions of Old Louisville, through the Frederick Law Olmsted-designed park system including Iroquois Park, and finish near the Ohio River waterfront. It is one of the few marathons that takes you onto a world-famous racetrack.
The full marathon has a 6-hour course limit, which works out to roughly a 13:45 per mile (8:33 per km) minimum pace. Because of that pace requirement, walkers are not permitted to register for the full marathon — though the companion miniMarathon (half) has a more forgiving 4-hour, 15:00 per mile limit if you prefer to walk.
Dress for a cool, humid start. Late-April mornings in Louisville begin near 62°F / 17°C and warm into the low 70s°F (low 20s°C) by midday, with humidity around 76% and roughly a 1-in-3 chance of rain. Singlet and shorts with a throwaway layer at the start is the usual choice; the humidity makes hydration and electrolytes matter more than the temperature alone suggests.
Results are posted on the official site at derbyfestivalmarathon.com shortly after the race, with live tracking through the timing partner on RunSignUp. The marathon starts early on Saturday morning at 7:00 a.m. local Eastern time from downtown Louisville (the wheelchair division rolls out a few minutes earlier), so plan to arrive with time to park and reach the start corrals.
