What to Prepare: Over the past 20 years the median temperature around Oct 18 has been 14 degrees C, with 8 years in 10 landing between 10.8 and 17.4 degrees — inside the band associated with peak marathon performance. Rain is the variable that actually bites: a 29% wet-day probability, and the 2025 edition went off in mist at close to 90% humidity. Pack a light windbreaker and check the forecast from a week out.

Wind at 10.5 km/h can affect your marathon pace by 5-15 seconds per kilometer. Headwinds slow you down exponentially — a 20 km/h wind costs more than twice a 10 km/h wind.

| Profile | Starts at Yongningmen on the Xi'an city wall, runs north up South Street past the Bell Tower and East Gate, turns onto the ring road hugging the wall's eastern face, then heads northeast through the Chanba eco-district to finish inside Xi'an Olympic Sports Centre Stadium. Dense historic landmarks early, wide-open riverside boulevards late, with two out-and-back turnarounds near the end. The organizers have never published elevation data — the gain figures circulating online have no traceable source. |

Start with the hard part: Xi'an has no working English registration channel. The official English site exists but is a fossil — its newest news item is dated September 2023 and its regulations page still lists the 2023 race date. Actual entry runs through a Chinese-language WeChat mini-program with real-name verification, and packet pickup is gated by on-site facial recognition. If you cannot navigate WeChat in Chinese, you need someone who can. International elite athletes are the exception: the 2025 regulations direct them to contact the organizing committee's dedicated line (phone 400-11-42195-5) rather than entering through the public platform.
The good news is the price. Entry is 200 RMB (roughly 28 USD) for the marathon, with no foreigner surcharge — among the cheapest big-city marathons anywhere. That fee held flat from 2023 through 2025.
The race is set for October 18, 2026, a date confirmed independently by the Chinese Athletics Association's 2026 national race directory (entry 447, category A) and the World Athletics 2026 label calendar. The 2026 entry schedule is now official: registration opens August 4 at 11:00 Beijing time, for a field of 36,000 across two events only — marathon and half, with the fun run dropped. The official website still showed the 2025 edition as of August 3, so the WeChat channels are the working entry path; the start time remains unannounced (2023 and 2025 both went off at 7:30 AM, a reasonable guess, not a commitment).
The label history is worth getting right, because most of what circulates online is wrong. Xi'an held a World Athletics Elite Label at each of its 2021, 2023 and 2024 editions (the 2022 race was cancelled), and was awarded Gold for 2025 — reporting at the time called it the only gold-label race in northwest China as of that announcement.
World Athletics' current calendar, however, now lists that 2025 edition as a plain Label, and 2026 is a plain Label as well. The structural backdrop is a quota: World Athletics caps gold-label marathons worldwide, revised to 27 in August 2025, and China's allocation tightened for the 2026 round with Xi'an left off the list.
For most runners the practical consequence is the elite field: the 2024 podiums included Ethiopian and Kenyan athletes, while all 16 of the top-eight men and women in 2025 were Chinese (men's winner Wang Hongwei 2:13:24, women's Huang Fei 2:31:01).
Note also that the distances share a start line but finish in different places. In 2025 all events started at Yongningmen; the marathon finished at Xi'an Olympic Sports Centre Stadium, the half at the Xi'an International Convention Centre on Huizhan 1st Road, and the fun run at Daming Palace. For 2026 only the marathon and half remain, with finish layouts pending the new regulations. If your group has split across distances, plan the post-race meetup and transport separately.
The gun goes off at the roundabout on the east side of Yongningmen South Square, at the gate of Xi'an's city wall known as the Gate of Welcome. The course runs straight north up South Street and reaches the Bell Tower roundabout just past the 1 km mark — the tower at the historic centre of the walled city, and the most photographed stretch of the race.
After turning east and rounding the East Gate, the route joins the eastern ring road and runs alongside the outer face of the city wall, dipping through the Chaoyangmen underpass before rejoining the ring road. Watch your footing at the tunnel mouths, and do not chase the instant-pace reading on your watch while GPS drops underground.
This is the loudest part of the race and therefore the easiest place to ruin it. The 2025 edition staged 40 cultural cheer stations along the route with Qin opera, drum troupes and traditional dance. Note what those are: performances, not food stops. The actual aid stations begin at 5 km and repeat every 2 km, 19 in total across the marathon.
Leaving the ring road, the course turns north onto Taihua Road, and the dense historic landmarks end there. Treat everything up to this point as a warm-up rather than a race — the result is decided later, out on the exposed riverside roads. Lock in a first-half target with our Pace Calculator before the start rather than following the crowd.
Past Taihua Road the course threads through Yongshun and Chanba 3rd Road into the Chanba eco-district, then picks up Guangyuntan Avenue and Ouya Avenue before settling onto Bahe East Road along the river. The scenery swaps old brick and tile for a wide, new, low-density riverside district.
That openness costs you in three ways. Crowd support thins out noticeably — past 30 km you are largely running on your own. Nothing blocks the wind, and around October 18 the median wind speed is about 10 km/h, with one year in ten seeing 18 km/h or more.
Third are the turnarounds. The course reverses once at Shangshan Lane and again just south of the Bahe East Road and Hedi Road junction. Turnarounds cut both ways psychologically: you get to see the runners coming back at you, which gives you a reference point ahead and pressure from behind. Take the inside line early rather than braking into the cones.
The finish comes off Bahe East Road into the Xi'an Olympic Sports Centre Stadium — the only part of the course wrapped in grandstands. A negative split here has to be bought at the start: every second the old-city atmosphere gains you in the first 21 km gets repaid on the empty roads by the river. Model the split with our Negative Split Planner.
The cutoff is 6 hours 15 minutes, not 6 hours. Off a 7:30 AM start, the marathon closes at 13:45. The half allows 3 hours 15 minutes and the fun run 2 hours. Those 15 extra minutes over the usual round number change how you play the last 10 km.
The marathon has eight intermediate cutoffs plus the finish: 8:40 at 5 km, 9:20 at 10 km, 9:55 at 15 km, 10:35 at 20 km and 11:20 at 25 km, then 12:00 at 30 km, 12:45 at 35 km, 13:30 at 40 km and 13:45 at the line.
The opening is the most forgiving checkpoint, not the tightest. Clearing 5 km by 8:40 allows 14:00 per km. The squeeze is at the other end: 40 km to the finish gives you 15 minutes for 2.195 km, about 6:50 per km, and averaged over the whole race the limit works out to 8:53 per km.
The detail that catches people out is that cutoffs run on clock time, not chip time. Starting from a rear corral can cost ten minutes or more before you reach the start line, and that time comes out of your allowance. This table comes from the 2025 official competition regulations — worth re-checking once the 2026 details are announced.
Aid and bag drop. Aid stations run every 2 km from the 5 km mark, 19 in all. Five of them — at 15, 27, 31, 35 and 39 km — carry the full set of drinks, water and energy food, per the 2025 competition regulations; the organizers note that on-site provision takes precedence over the published plan. Bag drop closes at 7:15, a full 15 minutes before the gun, which is the single most common logistical mistake at this race.
Budget a separate trip for packet pickup. In 2025 it was held at the Xi'an Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium (Metro Line 14, Olympic Sports Centre station) out in Chanba — a long way from the walled old city where you start. Pickup requires a timed appointment booked in the WeChat mini-program, capped at 2,000 runners per slot. Runners using a Chinese national ID are cleared by facial recognition; anyone presenting a passport or a Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan permit is processed at a staffed manual counter instead. Nobody can collect on your behalf, and there is no race-morning pickup. Non-Chinese runners must present an original passport; without the original document, kit is refused.
Carb-loading in Xi'an is genuinely easy. The city's 2022-2024 consumption plan branded it an "international food capital", though Chinese internet users have their own name for it — the carbohydrate capital. Hand-pulled and oil-splashed noodles, flatbread soaked in mutton soup and roujiamo are all high-carb staples, and the Muslim Quarter sits within walking distance of the Yongningmen and Bell Tower start area. Work out your actual gram target with our Carb Loading Calculator, and resist testing chili oil for the first time inside 48 hours of the race.

Use Calculator →Yes, but not in English. The official English website is still live and still shows the 2023 edition — its latest news post is from September 2023 and its regulations page lists the 2023 race date. There is no maintained English entry path. Registration runs through Chinese-language WeChat channels (the "Zhangshang Xima" mini-program and the race's WeChat public accounts) and requires real-name verification. Practically, you need working Chinese or a Chinese-speaking friend with a WeChat account.
International elite athletes have a separate route. The 2025 regulations state that foreign athletes meeting the elite standard must contact the organizing committee directly rather than entering through the public platform, via the committee's dedicated phone line (400-11-42195-5) or its official email address.
The upside: entry is 200 RMB, about 28 USD, with no foreigner premium — that price has been unchanged since 2023.
Registration opens August 4, 2026 at 11:00 Beijing time. The announcement also confirmed a field of 36,000 across two events only — marathon and half. As of August 3 the official website still displayed the 2025 edition, so treat the WeChat channels (the Zhangshang Xima mini-program and the race's public accounts) as the working entry path.
The closing date has not been published. Past windows moved around a lot — September 13-15 in 2023, September 9-14 in 2024, July 5-27 in 2025, now early August for 2026 — so watch the official channels for the deadline rather than assuming a pattern.
Roughly 13% for the 2025 edition by our own calculation — the organizers have never published an acceptance rate. That year drew 286,537 applicants from 50 countries and regions for 38,000 places (22,000 marathon, 12,000 half, 4,000 fun run). Dividing one by the other gives about 13%; treat it as an estimate rather than an official figure. For 2026 the announced field is 36,000 across marathon and half only, with no per-event split published yet.
Two routes skip the lottery. Time qualification applies to the marathon only: sub-3:00 for men and sub-3:20 for women (both exclusive), using results from designated top-tier races within a set qualifying period, capped at 4,000 runners total and 2,000 per gender. Charity places numbered 200 for the marathon and 300 for the half in 2025, at 1,500 RMB, with the donation non-refundable.
Run the cumulative odds across multiple attempts with our Lottery Odds Calculator.
Six hours 15 minutes for the marathon, closing at 13:45 off a 7:30 start. The half marathon gets 3 hours 15 minutes and the fun run 2 hours. Runners who plan around a flat 6 hours end up misjudging their final-stage margin by 25 minutes.
Eight intermediate checkpoints enforce the limit, plus the finish: 8:40 at 5 km, 9:20 at 10 km, 9:55 at 15 km, 10:35 at 20 km, 11:20 at 25 km, 12:00 at 30 km, 12:45 at 35 km, 13:30 at 40 km and 13:45 at the line.
The first checkpoint is the most generous, not the harshest. 5 km by 8:40 works out to 14:00 per km, while the closing 2.195 km from 40 km demands roughly 6:50 per km.
The trap is that cutoffs are measured on clock time rather than chip time. Starting from a rear corral can cost ten minutes or more before you even cross the line, and that time counts against every checkpoint that follows. This schedule comes from the 2025 official competition regulations; re-check it once 2026 details are published.
Neither. The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda is not on the marathon or half marathon route, despite the widely copied "city wall plus Bell Tower plus pagoda" description. What the marathon actually passes, per the 2025 official route, is Yongningmen, the Bell Tower roundabout, the East Gate, the eastern ring road along the city wall and the Chaoyangmen underpass, before heading out to the Chanba district and the Ba River.
Daming Palace is also off the marathon route — it is the finish for the roughly 7 km fun run only. The Terracotta Warriors sit well outside the city and are not part of any race distance. Plan those as separate sightseeing, ideally after the race rather than the day before.
October 18 is one of the most crowded dates on the 2026 calendar — at least eight World Athletics label races share it. The list includes Amsterdam (Platinum Label), Beijing, Dongying and Ljubljana (Gold), the Delhi Half (Gold), plus Toronto and the Tokyo Legacy Half (Elite). Xi'an holds the lowest label of the group.
Choose Amsterdam or Toronto if you are chasing a time — deep elite fields, fast flat courses and straightforward English-language entry. Choose Beijing if you want a Chinese Gold Label race with a stronger competitive field.
Choose Xi'an for what the others cannot offer: a start under the walls of one of China's ancient imperial capitals, a route through the Bell Tower at the centre of the old city, reliably cool mid-October weather, and an entry fee of about 28 USD. It is a race to experience rather than a race to win a place in.
Cool, with rain as the main risk. Across the last 20 years the median temperature in the week either side of October 18 is 14 degrees C, with 8 years in 10 between 10.8 and 17.4 degrees and a median apparent temperature of 11.6 degrees. That sits inside the band the largest study of marathon weather (Mantzios 2022, 1,258 races) associates with peak performance — roughly 10 to 17.5 degrees air temperature.
The variable to plan for is precipitation: a 29% wet-day probability, and median humidity of 69%, which is damper than the region's dry-autumn reputation suggests. The 2025 race went off at 11-12 degrees in mist, with a high near 15; the rain held off until evening.
Air quality is usually not a concern at this point in the year. October AQI across 2022 to 2025 averaged 41 to 71 (derived by averaging daily readings), in the good-to-moderate band, and race day 2025 came in around 37, with sources ranging 35 to 37. Xi'an's heavy-pollution season sets in from late November, after the race window.
In 2025 pickup was held at the Xi'an Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium, next to the Olympic Sports Centre station on Metro Line 14, in the Chanba district well east of the old city. You must book a time slot in the WeChat mini-program in advance; each slot is capped at 2,000 runners, and turning up without a booking means no kit.
Proxy collection is not accepted, and there is no pickup on race morning — the trip is mandatory and non-delegable, so build it into your travel days. On identity checks the flow splits: Chinese national ID holders go through facial recognition, while passport, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan permit holders are handled at a staffed manual counter.
Bring the original of your identity document: a passport for non-Chinese runners, the corresponding travel permit or residence permit for Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan runners. Copies and photos are not accepted, and kit is refused without the original. These were the 2025 rules; confirm them once 2026 details are announced.
