Race Day Weather

Average Temperature18°C / 64°F
Humidity65%
Wind12 km/h
Rain Chance10%
Typical ConditionsMild Atlantic autumn, typically 14-22 C with sea breezes

What to Prepare: October on the Lisbon coast is one of Europe's friendlier autumn marathon windows: cool mornings warming into the high teens, low rainfall, and a steady Atlantic breeze off the water. The seafront Marginal road has little shade, so the sun can feel stronger than the air temperature on a clear day. Start in light kit, carry your own electrolytes if you are sensitive, and use the river-and-ocean breeze rather than fighting it.

Wind Impact on Race Day

Wind at 12 km/h can affect your marathon pace by 5-15 seconds per kilometer. Headwinds slow you down exponentially — a 20 km/h wind costs more than twice a 10 km/h wind.

Course Profile

Course TypePoint-to-point
Elevation Gain85m
TerrainRoad
ProfileA genuinely flat, fast coastal course. The full marathon starts in Carcavelos (in front of NOVA School of Business and Economics), then runs almost entirely along the Estrada Marginal seafront, passing Estoril and the gardens of Oeiras with the Atlantic on one side. It curves into the Tagus estuary past the Belem landmarks, the Jeronimos Monastery and Belem Tower, before finishing on the riverfront at Praca do Comercio in central Lisbon. There are only gentle undulations and no significant climbs, which is why it draws personal-best hunters as well as scenery seekers.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the 2026 EDP Lisbon Marathon?

The full marathon is run on Saturday, October 10, 2026, with an 08:00 start. The event spans the weekend: the marathon is on Saturday and the half marathon on Sunday, October 11. For reference, the 2025 marathon was held on Saturday, October 25, 2025.

Does the full marathon cross the Vasco da Gama Bridge?

No. This is a common mix-up. The Vasco da Gama Bridge crossing belongs to the Sunday half marathon, which starts on the bridge. The full marathon never crosses a bridge: it runs the Atlantic seafront from Carcavelos, through Estoril and Oeiras, past Belem, and into Lisbon along the Tagus riverfront to Praca do Comercio.

Is the Lisbon Marathon course flat and good for a personal best?

Yes. The course is almost entirely along the flat seafront Estrada Marginal and Tagus riverfront, with only gentle undulations and no significant hills. It is a World Athletics Label road race on a certified, scenic point-to-point route, which makes it popular both for fast times and for runners who want an ocean-and-river backdrop.

How much does it cost to enter the 2026 Lisbon Marathon?

Entry is tiered by registration order. The first 2,000 entries are EUR 70; entries 2,001 to 5,000 are EUR 95; and from 5,001 onwards it is EUR 130, plus a small transaction fee. Registering early is the only way to lock in the lowest price.

Is registration first-come-first-served or by lottery?

It is first-come-first-served, not a lottery. There is no ballot or qualifying time to enter; you register online directly through the organiser, and the price rises in tiers as more places are taken. Bibs are personal and non-transferable.

What is the time limit to finish?

The cutoff is 6 hours, measured from the official start. That works out to roughly an 8:30 per kilometre (about 13:45 per mile) pace including stops, which is comfortable for most runners but leaves limited margin for very slow walkers.

How big is the field?

Marathon registration is capped at 15,000 places, though actual marathon turnout is smaller: the 2025 edition recorded about 9,170 finishers. The weekend as a whole, including the half marathon and the shorter event, draws a much larger combined crowd.

Where does the marathon start and how do I get there?

The start is in Carcavelos, on the N6-7 road in front of NOVA School of Business and Economics, west of central Lisbon. The simplest way there is the Cascais commuter train line from Lisbon (Cais do Sodre), which runs frequently and reaches the coast in roughly half an hour. The finish at Praca do Comercio is in the heart of the city.
