Wind at 15.3 km/h can affect your marathon pace by 5-15 seconds per kilometer. Headwinds slow you down exponentially — a 20 km/h wind costs more than twice a 10 km/h wind.

Use Calculator →The race is held on a Sunday in late March, timed for Kyushu's cherry-blossom season. Recent editions have landed on the fourth Sunday of March, so the 2027 race is expected on or around March 28, 2027, with a 9:00 AM start. The official date is confirmed by the organizing committee in the months before entry opens, so check the official site and RUNNET to lock in your plans.
There is no lottery: full-marathon entry is first-come, first-served (online only), so the 8,500 spots can fill before the deadline. The entry window is short, typically opening in early October for about three weeks, and the full-marathon fee is 14,500 yen. Decide on a goal first with our race time predictor, then be ready the moment registration opens.
It is one of Japan's flattest big-marathon courses, with only about 10 m of total elevation difference across the whole distance. That flatness, paired with cool spring weather, gives it a high completion rate and makes it a genuine PR-hunting race. Plan an even effort with our pace calculator to take advantage of the level terrain.
The time limit is 6 hours 30 minutes from the 9:00 AM start, with intermediate cutoff gates along the way. It is a moderate limit for a major Japanese marathon, comfortable for most trained finishers but not as forgiving as a 7-hour race, so first-timers should train to hold a steady pace through the late kilometers.
Yes. The course is certified by the Japan Association of Athletics Federations (JAAF / 日本陸連公認), so an official chip time can be used toward Boston Marathon qualifying if you meet your age-group standard. The flat profile makes it a strong place to chase a qualifier; check where you stand with our Boston qualifying calculator.
The point route runs through the Saga plain past the Saga Castle Honmaru History Museum and the Yoshinogari historical park, follows the Tabuse River, and finishes inside SAGA Stadium. In a good year, cherry blossoms line parts of the course, giving the race its sakura identity, though peak bloom timing can vary year to year.
Many nationalities can enter Japan visa-free for short tourist stays; confirm your own requirement before booking, as Japan currently has no ESTA or eTA. Saga is reached via Saga Airport, the nearby Fukuoka hub, or the Kyushu rail network, making a race weekend combined with a Fukuoka or Nagasaki visit straightforward.
