Paris Running Routes: 5 Best Seine, Bois & Garden Loops
Five Paris running routes, exact distances: 7 km car-free Seine quays, Bois de Boulogne lakes, the 2 km Luxembourg loop, Canal Saint-Martin.
Paris runs flat and central. The Seine banks through the heart of the city are now car-free, two large forest parks book-end the east and west, and the palace gardens offer measured gravel loops. The Paris Marathon threads many of these same landmarks each April. Below are the routes Parisians actually use, with exact loop distances and surfaces.
Best Running Routes in Paris
Tuileries & Along the Seine
7 km car-free · Riverside & gardens
Tuileries gravel paths drop to the car-free Parc Rives de Seine. The Left Bank promenade runs exactly 2.3 km (Pont de l'Alma to Musée d'Orsay); the Right Bank is traffic-free from the Tuileries to Bastille (about 4.5 km) — together roughly 7 km of car-free quay across both banks, past the Louvre and Notre-Dame.
Bois de Boulogne
3.2-5 km loops · Forest park
The gravel loop around the Lac Inférieur is about 3.2 km; circle both lakes (Inférieur and Supérieur) for roughly 5 km, or the Longchamp racecourse for a 3.6 km loop. There is a free timed 5K parkrun here on Saturday mornings.
Luxembourg Gardens
2 km loop · Garden
A roughly 2 km gravel loop (1.3 mi) around the perimeter in the Latin Quarter — flat, shaded, with Wallace fountains to refill. The gates close at dusk, so it suits daytime easy runs.
Canal Saint-Martin
4.5 km · Canal path
The towpath runs 4.5 km from the Bassin de la Villette down to the Seine, flat and tree-lined under the iron swing-bridges. Head north along the Bassin de la Villette and Canal de l'Ourcq to stretch it past 10 km round trip.
Bois de Vincennes
2-13.7 km · Forest park
Loop the Lac Daumesnil in about 2 km, or follow the City of Paris's signed Boucle du Bois de Vincennes for 13.7 km with only 58 m of climb. Quieter and flatter than the Bois de Boulogne.

- The Paris Marathon runs past the Eiffel Tower, Louvre, and along the Champs-Élysées
- Refill at the green Wallace fountains in the parks and along the Seine — free drinking water, running mid-March to mid-November (off in winter to avoid freezing)
- Under the Paris Respire scheme the Bois de Boulogne closes to cars Saturdays and Sundays (9am-6pm year-round), and the Bois de Vincennes on Sundays and holidays
- Garden paths (Luxembourg, Tuileries) are gravel and close at dusk; the Seine quays and canal towpaths are paved and stay open
- Avoid the Bois de Boulogne and Bois de Vincennes after dark — both are large and unlit; stick to the lit Seine quays and central gardens at night
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Paris good for running?
Paris is excellent for running, combining world-class scenery with practical infrastructure. The pedestrianized Seine banks, Luxembourg Gardens, Tuileries, and two large forest parks (Boulogne and Vincennes) provide diverse running options. The mainly flat terrain is ideal for all levels.
What is the Paris Marathon route like?
The Paris Marathon starts on the Champs-Élysées, passes the Louvre, runs along the Seine, through the Bois de Vincennes and Bois de Boulogne, and finishes near the Arc de Triomphe. It's mostly flat with gentle elevation (~60m total) and incredibly scenic.
How do I enter the Paris Marathon?
The Paris Marathon uses open registration that typically sells out within weeks. Registration opens in September for the following April's race. There's no lottery — it's first-come, first-served. Register at the official ASO website as soon as entries open.
Can I run along the Seine?
Yes! Large sections of the Seine riverbanks have been pedestrianized, creating wonderful car-free running paths through central Paris. The Voies sur Berges (right bank) and Berges de Seine (left bank) are popular routes with views of Notre-Dame, the Eiffel Tower, and historic bridges.
What is the best park for running in Paris?
For central Paris: Luxembourg Gardens (short loops) and Tuileries (riverside extension). For long runs: Bois de Boulogne (west, 5-20 km options) or Bois de Vincennes (east, quieter). Each offers a different running experience — garden elegance vs. forest trails.
Where can I run 5K, 10K, or longer in Paris?
For 5K, loop both lakes in the Bois de Boulogne (about 5 km) or run two-and-a-half laps of the Luxembourg Gardens (2 km each). For 10K, run the car-free Parc Rives de Seine out-and-back along both banks. For 15K and up, the signed Boucle du Bois de Vincennes covers 13.7 km, and the Bois de Boulogne forest paths chain into 20 km-plus.
Where can I run in Paris without stopping for traffic?
The Parc Rives de Seine gives about 7 km of fully car-free quay along both banks (the Left Bank promenade alone is 2.3 km). The Bois de Boulogne and Bois de Vincennes close their main roads to cars on weekends under the Paris Respire scheme, and the Canal Saint-Martin towpath runs 4.5 km with long uninterrupted stretches.
Is it safe to run at night in Paris?
Stick to lit, busy routes after dark: the Seine quays, the Canal Saint-Martin, and the perimeters of central gardens. Avoid the Bois de Boulogne and Bois de Vincennes at night — they are large, unlit, and isolated. Note that the Luxembourg and Tuileries gardens lock their gates at dusk.
