Dress in layers you can run in, carry a packable waterproof, and expect the headwind to bite on exposed clifftops. Trail shoes with real grip beat road shoes on wet grass and rock.

Wind Impact on Race Day

Wind at 25.5 km/h can affect your marathon pace by 5-15 seconds per kilometer. Headwinds slow you down exponentially — a 20 km/h wind costs more than twice a 10 km/h wind.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you enter the Endurancelife Pembrokeshire Marathon?

Entry is open online, first-come-first-served through the official Endurancelife event page - there is no lottery. Numbers are tight: the marathon is capped at around 100 runners (the whole event, across 10K, half, marathon and ultra, is capped at about 500), so popular distances sell out well in advance. The 2026 marathon entry was £59; 2027 pricing is typically confirmed when the entry window opens.

How far is the Pembrokeshire marathon and is it a real marathon distance?

It is an over-distance trail marathon of about 27.3 miles (~44 km), not the standard 42.195 km / 26.2 miles. Like all Endurancelife Coastal Trail Series marathons it runs slightly long because the course follows the natural line of the coast path rather than a measured road. Treat the extra mile-plus as part of the challenge and plan your fuel and pacing for ~44 km, not 42.

How hard is the course and how much climbing is there?

It is genuinely tough. The marathon has roughly +935 m (3,067 ft) of total ascent over relentlessly undulating clifftop singletrack, grass, beach and coast path. There is almost no flat - you are constantly climbing out of and dropping into coves. Expect to run 10-20% slower than your road marathon time, and on a wet, windy day, slower still.

Is the Pembrokeshire marathon a Boston qualifier?

No. It is an over-distance, uncertified trail course, so times cannot be used for Boston qualifying or any other certified-course standard. It is, however, recognised as a UTMB qualifier, so the effort counts toward trail and ultra-trail entry indexes if that is your goal.

What is the time limit?

Plan for roughly an 8-hour window to finish. The marathon starts at 9:00 am, and there are intermediate checkpoint cut-offs on course (for example, marathon runners must reach the late checkpoint around the 19-mile mark by early afternoon) so that the field clears the exposed cliffs safely. Confirm the exact published cut-offs in the event manual before race day.

What should I wear and carry?

Wear trail shoes with aggressive grip - wet grass and rock are slick - and dress in layers for a cool, windy coast (high around 12°C / 54°F). Endurancelife enforces mandatory kit on coastal events, which typically includes a packable waterproof jacket, hat, and the ability to carry water and fuel between aid points. Carry your own gels and an emergency layer; the clifftops are remote and exposed.

Where does the race start and how do I get there?

The race starts and finishes at Little Haven, a small cove village on the southwest Welsh coast near Haverfordwest in Pembrokeshire. The nearest railhead is Haverfordwest; the nearest airports are Cardiff (CWL) and Bristol (BRS), both around a 1.5-2.5 hour drive away. Parking on site is limited, so arrive early or use any shuttle the organiser arranges.

When are results published?

Chip-timed results are usually posted on the Endurancelife website within a day or two of the event, with splits for each on-course checkpoint. Because it is a trail series, expect a results table rather than a certified, record-eligible road time.
