Race Day Weather

Average Temperature13°C / 56°F
Humidity65%
Wind15 km/h
Rain Chance40%
Typical ConditionsMid-November is mid-spring in the Southern Hemisphere, and Queenstown's alpine valley swings widely on race morning. The 8:20am start is cool, with lows around 3–7°C (38–45°F), warming to daytime highs near 13–18°C (56–64°F). Expect roughly a 40% chance of rain, breezy lakeside winds around 15 km/h, and fast-changing mountain skies.

What to Prepare: Dress in removable layers: a throwaway long-sleeve or gloves for the cold start, with a singlet or tee underneath for the warmer finish. Pack a light rain shell given the ~40% rain odds, and check the forecast the night before — alpine weather here turns quickly. Run the numbers on our Weather Score tool.

Wind Impact on Race Day

Wind at 15 km/h can affect your marathon pace by 5-15 seconds per kilometer. Headwinds slow you down exponentially — a 20 km/h wind costs more than twice a 10 km/h wind.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the Queenstown Marathon 2026 and what time does it start?

The NZ Sotheby's International Realty Queenstown Marathon is held on Saturday 14 November 2026, with the full marathon starting at 8:20am NZDT from Millbrook Resort near Arrowtown. The half marathon, 10K and kids' events start at separate times the same morning.

How do I enter, and how much does it cost?

Entry is open registration (no ballot) at queenstown-marathon.co.nz/entry-info. The full marathon costs around NZ$246, with cheaper super-early-bird and early-bird tiers earlier in the year. Online entries close 5:00pm on 13 November 2026 (the day before the race), and limited late entries are taken in person at Athlete Check-In unless sold out. Distances can sell out — the marathon hit a record 4,000+ entries in 2025 — so book early.

Is the Queenstown Marathon a Boston qualifier?

Yes. The course is AIMS-certified and accepted as a Boston Marathon qualifying course, so a qualifying time run here counts toward BQ. Check what time you need on our Boston Qualifying calculator.

How hard is the course — is it good for a PB?

It's one of New Zealand's faster scenic marathons: a point-to-point route that's mainly flat with a net descent and only about 120m of total climb. The surface is roughly 70% hard-packed trail and 30% road, so it's slightly softer underfoot than a pure road course but still very runnable. In 2025 both course records fell (men 2:25:02, women 2:48:31), confirming its PB potential. Plan your splits with our Pace Calculator.

What is the cut-off time?

The course closes at 4:00pm, which from the 8:20am start gives roughly a 7.5-hour window — generous enough for most walkers and first-timers, but note there are staggered checkpoint cut-offs along the route (for example around the 39km mark) rather than one final limit. Transport and aid stations are timed to this window, so always confirm the current checkpoint cut-offs on the official site before race day.

How do I get to Queenstown and where does the race finish?

Queenstown Airport (ZQN) has direct flights from Auckland, Christchurch and several Australian cities, with onward connections from major hubs. The marathon starts at Millbrook Resort near Arrowtown and finishes at the Queenstown Recreation Ground in the central CBD, so you can stay in town and walk to the finish festival. Free shuttle buses run to the start lines.

What's the weather like in November and what should I wear?

November is mid-spring: cold starts near 3–7°C warming to 13–18°C, with about a 40% chance of rain and breezy lakeside conditions. Wear layers you can shed and carry a light rain shell. Alpine weather changes fast, so check the forecast the night before.
