Running in Bali: Routes by Area, Run Clubs & Races
Where to run in Bali by area (Canggu, Sanur, Uluwatu, Ubud), run clubs for every day, dawn heat windows, dog & scooter real talk, and 2026 races.
Bali is very runnable if you respect three things: the heat, the hazards, and a surprisingly active run-club scene. Sunrise falls between 05:50 and 06:35 year-round and humidity rarely drops below 75%, so the only comfortable window is roughly 5:30-7:00 AM. Away from the resort promenades you will meet free-roaming dogs, scooter traffic, and missing sidewalks - so where you run matters as much as when. The island also hosts the Maybank Marathon, Indonesia's first World Athletics Elite Label race.
Best Running Routes in Bali
Canggu & Pererenan
1-5 km segments · Beach + rice paddy
The EN runner hub, but the worst surfaces. At low tide the hard-packed sand from Batu Bolong to Echo Beach is runnable; the Subak Uma Desa rice-paddy path runs about 1.3 km and extends to roughly 4.6 km toward Echo Beach. Honest truth: the moment you leave the sand or paddies the sidewalks are broken, crowded, and scooter-dense, and some beach sections carry drainage runoff - check the tide and stay on sand or paddy paths. Best before 7 AM.
Seminyak Beachfront
up to 7 km one-way · Sand + boardwalk
A mix of sand and paved boardwalk running up to about 7 km one-way toward Kuta and Segara. Flat and sunset-facing. Soft sand slows your pace, so favour the firmer boardwalk and the waterline at low tide.
Sanur Beach Promenade
~5 km paved · Seafront promenade
The island's best no-brainer long-run surface: an unbroken paved promenade of about 5 km from Mertasari Beach in the south to Matahari Terbit Beach in the north, flat with sunrise sea views. Busy and well-populated, which makes it the top pick for family runs and solo women, and a favourite for long runs.
Nusa Dua Promenade
~5-7 km paved (loop up to ~9 km) · Resort seafront
A fully paved seafront path of roughly 5-7 km through the gated resort enclave (Ayodya north toward Tanjung Benoa and Conrad), partly shaded and flat; adding the Waterblow peninsula loop stretches it to about 8-9 km. The best-maintained surface on the island, with strong security - a safe choice for solo runners.
Uluwatu (Bukit Peninsula)
varies, hilly · Clifftop lanes
Dramatic clifftop and temple scenery, but rolling hills, quiet rural lanes, and the island's most aggressive guard dogs (see the tips below). Run here with a group rather than solo on empty roads - Rise & Run meets at Uluwatu on Sunday mornings.
Ubud (Campuhan Ridge & rice trails)
2-3 km segments · Ridge + rice paddy
Cooler than the coast but just as humid. The Campuhan Ridge Walk is about 2 km one-way on a paved ridge with a gentle climb - arrive at least 30 minutes before sunrise, because the sun, the heat, and the crowds all arrive fast after. The Sweet Orange Trail is a 2-3 km out-and-back through rice fields, and Penestanan adds a flat ~2 km.

View Countdown →Running Tips for Bali
- Run at sunrise: it rises between 05:50 and 06:35 year-round and humidity stays above 75%, so 5:30-7:00 AM is the only comfortable window - cut your pace with our Heat Adjustment Calculator.
- Guard dogs are real, worst around Uluwatu and quiet rural lanes: they chase and bark hard but rarely bite. Slow to a walk, do not run straight at them, and stick to populated promenades or a group on those roads.
- Canggu has almost no sidewalks and heavy scooter traffic - run the beach at low tide or the rice-paddy paths instead of the main roads.
- Indomaret and Alfamart convenience stores are everywhere for cold water and electrolytes; bottled water on the tourist strips is marked up, so buy at the mini-marts.
- Solo runners, especially women: choose the Sanur or Nusa Dua promenades (busy, well-lit, patrolled) or join a run club - Bali has one nearly every day of the week.
- Rainy-season or midday backup: gym day passes run from about IDR 40,000 at Fit24 Sanur to about IDR 400,000 at Body Factory Canggu.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to run in Bali?
Yes, for most areas, as long as you run at sunrise and pick populated routes. The real risks are not crime but free-roaming dogs (worst in Uluwatu), scooter traffic, and missing sidewalks in Canggu. The Sanur and Nusa Dua promenades are the safest, best-surfaced options - and a run club meets almost every day if you want company on quieter roads.
What time should I run in Bali?
Between 5:30 and 7:00 AM. Sunrise is 05:50-06:35 year-round, humidity stays above 75%, and by 8 AM the sun is punishing. Even at 6 AM expect 27-28°C with high humidity, so drop your pace 10-20% versus temperate conditions - our Heat Adjustment Calculator estimates the impact.
Are the dogs in Bali a problem for runners?
Yes, mainly in Uluwatu and on quiet rural lanes, where free-roaming guard dogs will chase and bark aggressively (bites are rare). Do not sprint away or run straight at them - slow to a walk, keep your distance, and avoid empty roads at first light. Sticking to busy promenades like Sanur, or running with a group, removes the problem almost entirely.
Which area should I stay in for running in Bali?
It depends on your priority. Canggu has the biggest run-club scene plus beach and rice-paddy runs, but poor sidewalks. Sanur has the best paved promenade and is the safest for solo and family runners. Nusa Dua offers resort-grade security and a well-maintained seafront path. Ubud gives you cooler rice-paddy ridges away from the coast.
Can women run alone in Bali?
Yes, on the Sanur and Nusa Dua promenades, which are busy, well-lit, and patrolled. Avoid empty Uluwatu lanes and unlit rural roads on your own. Bali's run clubs meet almost daily and are beginner-friendly, so joining one is an easy way to run safely with company.
Where can I run in Bali when it rains or it is too hot?
Gym day passes are the backup: Fit24 in Sanur is the cheapest at about IDR 40,000-50,000, Body Factory in Canggu is around IDR 400,000 with spa and classes included, and resort hotels in Nusa Dua sell pool-and-gym passes. Check conditions before heading out with our Weather Score Calculator.
Are there run clubs in Bali?
Yes - Bali has an unusually active scene, with a group meeting nearly every day of the week. Rise & Run, Nomads Run Club (at Runamuk), the Canggu Run Club, FAR Ubud, and Sanur's IndoRunners are the anchors, and most are free with no signup. See the day-by-day table above for times and meeting points.
