Running in Osaka: 6 Routes, Night Running & Marathon Prep
Osaka Castle 3.5 km loop, Nagai Park marathon course, Yodo River 50+ km. Running Base showers, night safety tips, and Osaka Marathon lottery guide.
Osaka rewards runners with a variety that Tokyo's Imperial Palace can't match — a castle moat loop, a park where 15 laps is exactly a marathon, a river path to Kyoto, and a food-obsessed marathon with a 500-meter snack station at 32 km. The city is almost entirely flat, the running community is welcoming, and Running Base at Osaka Castle provides proper changing facilities. What makes Osaka distinct is the Kansai warmth: locals cheer in dialect, parks are uncrowded at dawn, and the Osaka Marathon's "Maido Aid" turns a race into a culinary tour. This guide covers where to run, when to go, and how to navigate Osaka's running culture as a visitor.
Best Running Routes in Osaka
Osaka Castle Park
3.5 km (Long) / 2.9 km (Short) · Iconic circuit
Kansai's premier running destination. Two official courses (remodeled 2021) loop around the castle moat with 1 km distance markers. The east side is quietest; combine both courses for ~6 km or add the outer perimeter for ~10 km. Running Base at JO-TERRACE OSAKA offers lockers, 5 showers, towel rental, and ASICS shoe rental (~1,000 JPY). Best after 6 PM when tourists clear and the castle glows under floodlights, or at 5-6 AM for near-empty paths.
Nakanoshima Riverside
6.3 km loop · Riverside
A full counter-clockwise circuit of the Nakanoshima island between Tosabori River and Dojima River — flat, mostly signal-free, with views of the Central Public Hall and rose gardens (3,700 roses, blooming May and October). The eastern section is better maintained and safer at night. Connect to Osaka Castle via Temmabashi Bridge for an 8-10 km combined route. Ideal for business travelers staying near Umeda (1.5 km from JR Osaka Station).
Nagai Park
2.813 km loop · Marathon training
Known as "the Holy Land of Kansai runners." One loop is precisely 2,813 m — 15 laps = 42.195 km. Official distance markers at 5/10/15/20/30/40 km positions. The course is free, well-lit for evening running, and always busy with local runners. Facilities: Nagai Training Center Running Station (lockers + showers, Tue-Sat until 21:30) or nearby sento. Do not leave belongings unattended — use coin lockers at Nagai Metro Station.
Yodo River Path
10-50+ km · Long run
Signal-free riverside paths on both banks stretching from central Osaka to Kyoto. North bank: 11 km with skyline views, popular start from Kema Lock. South bank: 18 km, quieter and longer. Best for half-marathon to ultra-distance training. Paved and wide, but exposed — winter brings strong headwinds and summer means zero shade. Multiple toilets and parking access points along the route. Several annual race events held here.
Minoo Falls Trail
2.7 km one-way (paved) / 12-17 km (trail extensions) · Nature trail
The basic Takimichi path from Hankyu Minoo Station to Minoo Waterfall is a gentle 2.7 km paved climb — more of a scenic jog than serious trail running. For actual trail training, the east-side trail loop extends to ~12 km with 700 m of cumulative elevation gain, or combine with Katsuoji Temple for a ~17 km circuit. Shaded, cooler than the city, and spectacular for autumn foliage in November. 30 minutes from Umeda by Hankyu Line.
Okawa River & Kema Sakuranomiya Park
3-10 km · Cherry blossom riverside
Start at Minamitenma Park and follow the Okawa River northeast through Kema Sakuranomiya Park — one of Osaka's top cherry blossom spots (spectacular late March to early April). Few tourists compared to Osaka Castle. Connect south to Osaka Castle Park for an 8-10 km loop. Flat, tree-lined paths with less foot traffic than the castle routes. Accessible from Tenmabashi or Sakuranomiya stations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Osaka Castle Park: outer moat or inner loop? Do I need a ticket?
Run the outer moat loop — no ticket needed. The two official running courses (Long 3.5 km, Short 2.9 km, remodeled 2021) follow the castle's outer perimeter and are freely accessible 24 hours. The castle tower itself requires a ticket, but runners never go inside. The east side of the park has fewer tourists. You can combine both courses for a ~6 km run, or add the outer perimeter road for ~10 km total. 12 laps of the Long Course = a full marathon distance.
Where can I do interval training on a track in Osaka?
Yanmar Stadium Nagai has a world-class track, but it is only open to groups, not individual runners. For intervals, your best options are: Nagai Park's measured loop (2,813 m with official distance markers at 5/10/15/20/30/40 km — calibrated for marathon distance), or the Morinomiya Q's Mall rooftop track — a free 300 m artificial turf running track on top of a shopping mall, open during business hours. For interval pace planning, use our Interval Calculator.
Is it safe to run at night around Osaka Castle?
The evening (after 6 PM) is actually the best time to run at Osaka Castle — tourist crowds clear out, the castle is beautifully illuminated, and the main paths are well-lit. Many local runners prefer this time slot. However, avoid running late at night (after 10 PM) in the park's northern and western sections, which are surrounded by office buildings that empty after dark. Early morning (5-6 AM) is another excellent option — at that hour the park is nearly empty.
Where should I stay in Osaka for running access?
Near Osaka Castle (e.g., New Otani Hotel): step out and run the castle loop, shower at Running Base. Umeda/Nakanoshima: run the 6.3 km Nakanoshima island loop or connect to Osaka Castle (8-10 km combined). Shin-Osaka Station: direct access to the Yodo River path — locals call it "the only option" for this area. Namba/Shinsaibashi: 3 km jog to Osaka Castle, or use the metro (10 min to Osaka-jo Koen Station). All routes are accessible by 5-6 AM with virtually no other runners.
How do I enter the Osaka Marathon? What are my odds?
The Osaka Marathon (February) uses a lottery, typically around 5-10x oversubscribed (varying by year, exceeding 10x in popular years), across a 34,000 total field (31,970 marathon). The 2026 edition had 32,746 marathon starters. Registration opens in late July and closes in late August, with results in late September. International runners can apply through JTB Sports Station. A charity entry (~$630 USD) guarantees a spot on a first-come-first-served basis and includes VIP perks. The course has a 7-hour time limit and a 94% completion rate. Track your countdown with our Marathon Countdown.
What is the Nagai Park running protocol?
Nagai Park is called "the Holy Land of Kansai runners". The loop is precisely 2,813 m, with official distance markers for a 15-lap full marathon (42.195 km). The running course is free and open at all hours — it's well-lit for evening running. Warning about belongings: the park has no public lockers at the stadium. Use nearby facilities instead: the Nagai Training Center Running Station (lockers + showers, Tue-Sat 9:00-21:30), Cerezo Futsal Park (changing + showers, 500 JPY), or local sento like Irifune Onsen. Never leave bags unattended at the park — theft has been reported.
