What to Prepare: December in Miyazaki is gentle by Japanese-winter standards, but the start is cool and the sun climbs fast. Race in shorts and a light singlet with arm sleeves you can shed, and bring a cap and sunscreen for the exposed coastal Tropical Road.

Wind at 11 km/h can affect your marathon pace by 5-15 seconds per kilometer. Headwinds slow you down exponentially — a 20 km/h wind costs more than twice a 10 km/h wind.

There is no lottery — full-marathon entry is first-come, first-served and closes as soon as the 10,800 quota is filled. For 2026, registration ran mid-June (June 17–30) and the full marathon has since sold out — entry is now closed, having reached its 10,800 cap. The entry fee was 13,500 yen. For 2027, sign up the moment entry opens in mid-June; set a realistic goal first with our race time predictor.
The time limit is 6 hours 20 minutes, with intermediate checkpoints along the way. Paired with one of the flattest profiles of any Japanese marathon, that makes it a strong choice for a first marathon or a winter PR attempt. Plan even splits on the level Tropical Road with our pace calculator.
Yes. The full-marathon course is certified by the Japan Association of Athletics Federations (JAAF / 日本陸連公認), so an official chip time can be used toward Boston Marathon qualifying if you meet your age-group standard. Check where you stand with our Boston qualifying calculator.
It is one of the warmest, most scenic winter marathons in Japan. Runners follow the palm-lined Tropical Road with the Pacific on one side and are cheered the whole way by roughly 2,500 high-school student volunteers, whose taiko, dance and shouting squads have become the event's signature. Miyazaki's mild December climate and resort feel make it a destination race rather than a grind.
Miyazaki has its own airport with direct domestic flights from Tokyo, Osaka and Fukuoka, plus some international connections; Fukuoka is the main rail gateway into Kyushu. Many nationalities can enter Japan visa-free for short tourist stays, and Japan does not currently require an ESTA or eTA — confirm your own nationality's rule before booking.
Southern Kyushu stays mild in December. Expect roughly 8-15C at the start, generally dry and sunny with a light Pacific breeze — closer to ideal racing weather than the cold, snowy conditions on much of Honshu. Dress for a cool start you can race in, and bring sun protection for the open coastal stretch.
