| Typical Conditions | Early January is mid-summer in Tasmania, but Hobart stays mild and breezy compared with mainland Australia. The 6am start means a cool morning of around 12–15°C (54–59°F), climbing toward the low-20s°C by late morning. Average race-window temperature is about 17°C (63°F) with 65% humidity, a steady ~18 km/h breeze off the River Derwent, and a low ~25% chance of showers. |
What to Prepare: Dress for a cool start that warms quickly: a singlet and shorts with arm sleeves you can strip mid-race works well. The Derwent foreshore is exposed, so expect a headwind on one direction of each lap. Hydrate early even though it feels cool — sun strengthens fast after 9am. Check your effort with the Weather Score tool.
Based on historical averages for race week. Use our Weather Score Calculator and What to Wear Guide for personalized advice.
Wind at 18 km/h can affect your marathon pace by 5-15 seconds per kilometer. Headwinds slow you down exponentially — a 20 km/h wind costs more than twice a 10 km/h wind.

Yes. The two-lap course runs predominantly flat alongside the River Derwent foreshore with only about 30 m of total elevation gain and no significant climbs. Combined with cool early-January morning temperatures, it is one of the more PB-friendly marathons in Australia. Plan your splits with the Negative Split Planner.
Yes, the Cadbury Marathon is run on a certified course and is Boston Marathon qualifying-eligible. Check your required finish time against the current standards with the Boston Qualifying calculator before you target it.
It is a small, friendly event — the full marathon typically draws around 278 finishers. Half marathon, 10 km, 5 km fun run and a 1 km kids' event run alongside it, so the overall day is larger, but the marathon itself stays intimate and well-organised by Athletics Tasmania.
The start is at the Cadbury Chocolate Factory in Claremont, roughly 15 km north of central Hobart. Hobart Airport connects to most mainland Australian cities; from the city, drive or take a Metro Tasmania bus toward Claremont. Allow extra time for the early 6am start — parking is available near the factory grounds.
