Wind Impact on Race Day

Wind at 28.7 km/h can affect your marathon pace by 5-15 seconds per kilometer. Headwinds slow you down exponentially — a 20 km/h wind costs more than twice a 10 km/h wind.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you enter the Isle of Man Marathon?

Entry is open online registration - no lottery and no qualifying time. You sign up through the My Race Results page (event 381348) linked from the official Isle of Man Veteran Athletes' Club website. The standard 2026 full-marathon fee is around £38 for unaffiliated runners (about £33 for England Athletics affiliated club members). It is a small race, so spots are not the constraint - travel and ferry/flight bookings are.

What is the Isle of Man Marathon course like?

It is an undulating two-lap road course on the Manx Northern route. Both laps start and finish in Ramsey - out from Mooragh Promenade toward Bride, Andreas and St Judes, then back, with the finish at Ballacloan Stadium. Total climb is roughly +239 m (784 ft), concentrated in the early miles of each lap, with flatter, exposed seafront and farmland stretches between. The full marathon covers slightly under two complete circuits of the ~13.25-mile loop to make the 26.2-mile distance.

How hard is the Isle of Man Marathon?

It is a moderate, honest course rather than a fast PR track. The +239 m of rolling climb and exposed coastal wind make it tougher than a flat city marathon, but there are no mountain-grade ascents. The bigger challenge is that it is a tiny field - only about 100 full-marathon finishers in 2025 (versus roughly 400 in the half) - so you should be comfortable running long stretches alone, mentally pacing yourself without a crowd.

Is there a time limit?

Yes - the marathon has a 6-hour cut-off, with a halfway gate at 3 hours (anyone passing the halfway point after 3 hours is asked to finish there). The 6-hour limit works out to roughly a 13:44 per-mile (8:32 per-km) average pace. Because the field is small and the course uses open island roads, it is worth confirming the latest cut-off and road-closure timings on the official site before race day, as logistics on a small island can differ year to year.

What should I wear for the weather?

Dress for a cool, breezy Irish Sea morning. Early-August Ramsey averages a high near 16°C (61°F), humidity around 83%, west wind near 21 km/h and about a 30% chance of a wet day. A light, breathable top with a packable wind layer for the exposed promenade is ideal, plus a cap and a thin glove option for the early miles. It very rarely turns hot here, so over-dressing is the more common mistake.

Does the Isle of Man Marathon count as a Boston qualifier?

No. It is not a certified Boston qualifier. No AIMS or World Athletics course certification has been published for this event, so a finish time here will not be accepted toward a Boston Marathon qualifying standard. Choose this race for the island experience and the scenic Manx coast, not for a BQ attempt.

When and where are the results?

Results are posted on the same My Race Results platform used for registration (the live timing page for the event). Marathon, half marathon and relay results all appear there, usually within hours of the finish. The full marathon is the smallest category, so scroll to the marathon results tab rather than the combined finisher list.
