Race Day Weather

Average Temperature14°C / 57°F
Humidity40%
Wind15 km/h
Rain Chance8%
Typical ConditionsLate July is mid-winter in the Southern Hemisphere and Uluru's coldest, driest month. Race-day daytime highs sit around 20-21°C (68-70°F), but the pre-dawn 7:45am start can begin near 0-5°C (32-41°F). Rain is rare (~8% chance), humidity is low (~40%), and the desert air is bone-dry with intense UV even in winter.

What to Prepare: Dress in layers you can shed: gloves and arm sleeves for the cold start, then strip to singlet and shorts as the sun climbs. Pack sunscreen, a cap and sunglasses — UV is strong despite the cool air. Carry your own fluids; dry desert air dehydrates fast. Check the Weather Score tool before you travel.

Wind Impact on Race Day

Wind at 15 km/h can affect your marathon pace by 5-15 seconds per kilometer. Headwinds slow you down exponentially — a 20 km/h wind costs more than twice a 10 km/h wind.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the Australian Outback Marathon 2026 and what time does it start?

The Australian Outback Marathon 2026 is held on Saturday, 25 July at Ayers Rock Resort, Yulara, in the Northern Territory. The full marathon and half marathon start together at 7:45am local time (ACST, UTC+9:30), while the 11km and 6km fun runs start at 8:30am.

How do I enter and how much does it cost?

There is no standalone entry fee. Race entry is bundled into a travel package booked through the organiser, Travelling Fit. Packages run roughly from AUD $1,150 (Red Earth, 3 days / 2 nights) up to AUD $2,195+ (Platinum, 6 days / 5 nights) and include accommodation at Ayers Rock Resort, meals, tours and guaranteed race entry. Entry cannot be purchased separately.

How hard is the course and is it good for a PB?

The course is relatively flat, with only a couple of inclines and soft-sand dunes, totalling about 100m of elevation gain. The catch is the surface: unsealed red-earth roads, bush tracks and soft sand slow your pace versus tarmac, so most runners treat it as a bucket-list experience rather than a personal best. Plan conservatively with our Pace Calculator.

Is there a time limit?

Yes. The marathon and half marathon both have an official 8-hour cut-off, which is generous and accommodates walkers and first-time desert runners. The 8-hour window gives most participants room to walk the soft-sand sections without pressure.

Is it Boston Qualifier eligible?

No. The Australian Outback Marathon is not a Boston Marathon qualifying race — the soft-sand, unsealed desert course is not a certified flat road measurement and is run as a destination event rather than a qualifier.

How do I get to Uluru for the race?

Fly into Ayers Rock Airport (Connellan, code AYQ) at Yulara, which has direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Cairns and Alice Springs on Jetstar and Qantas. The airport is a short transfer from Ayers Rock Resort, where all accommodation packages are based, so no car hire is needed.

What is the weather like in late July?

Late July is mid-winter and Uluru's driest, coolest month. Expect daytime highs around 20-21°C (68-70°F) but a cold pre-dawn start near 0-5°C (32-41°F). Rainfall is very low, humidity is around 40%, and UV stays strong, so layer up for the start and protect against sun once it rises.
