Race Day Weather

Average Temperature8.2°C / 47°F
Humidity90%
Wind25.9 km/h
Rain Chance53%
Typical ConditionsA cool, often damp mid-October morning in the Cairngorms foothills of Speyside, north-east Scotland. Expect around 9C (48F) at the 10:00 start, climbing only into the low teens, with high humidity, a fair chance of light rain, and a breeze rolling off Ben Rinnes.

What to Prepare: Dress for single-digit Celsius with a throwaway layer at Glenfarclas before the start. Pack a light waterproof and wear trail shoes — the Speyside Way is mostly forest track and old railway path that turns soft and muddy when wet. This is an effort-and-enjoy trail day, not a road PB.

Wind Impact on Race Day

Wind at 25.9 km/h can affect your marathon pace by 5-15 seconds per kilometer. Headwinds slow you down exponentially — a 20 km/h wind costs more than twice a 10 km/h wind.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Dramathon route?

The Full Dram is a point-to-point trail marathon from Glenfarclas distillery to Glenfiddich distillery in Speyside, Scotland. From the start on the flanks of Ben Rinnes it runs hilly ground past Ballindalloch Castle, then settles onto the Speyside Way through Tamdhu, Knockando, the Dalmunach distillery and Aberlour, before a final stretch through Balvenie to the finish at Glenfiddich in Dufftown. It threads past distilleries such as Cragganmore, Cardhu and Balvenie along the way.

Is the Dramathon a road marathon or a trail race?

It is a trail marathon. The course runs mostly on well-maintained forest tracks and footpaths, much of it along the old Speyside Railway line, with a few short road sections. The organiser recommends trail shoes. It is not a road-certified course, so do not expect a flat tarmac PB layout.

How much climbing does the Dramathon have, and is it flat?

It is rolling rather than flat. The old railway line keeps gradients gentle for long stretches, but there is one notable climb in each of the four sections plus a gradual uphill from Craigellachie to Dufftown at the end. Total elevation gain is around 211m over the marathon distance. Map the climbs against your effort with our elevation profile tool.

Do you really get whisky at the Dramathon finish?

Yes. The whisky theme is the whole point. The finish line for every distance is at Glenfiddich distillery, and finishers collect single-malt miniatures matched to the distance they ran, along with a branded Glencairn tasting glass. The route passes a string of famous Speyside distilleries, so the sights and smells of whisky country are part of the race itself.

How do I enter the Dramathon 2026, and does it sell out?

Entry is first-come, first-served via Entry Central, with places for 2026 opening at 6pm on 3 January 2026. It is one of the fastest-selling races in the UK — the 550-place full marathon sold out within 24 hours in recent years, so enter the moment places open or join the waiting list. Fees are paid in GBP.

What time does the Dramathon start and what is the cut-off?

The full marathon starts at 10:00 from Glenfarclas on Saturday 17 October 2026, with buses running runners out from the Glenfiddich finish area from around 09:00. The course uses staged closure points (for example Tamdhu Station by 2pm and Aberlour by 4pm), giving a generous overall limit of roughly 7 hours; runners who fall behind are brought to the finish by vehicle.

Does the Dramathon count for a Boston Qualifier or London Good For Age?

No. The Dramathon is a scenic trail marathon along the Speyside Way and the distance is approximate (just under 42.195km in places), so it is not a road-certified course and a time run here is not valid for Boston qualifying (BQ) or a London Good For Age (GFA) entry. If a BQ time is your goal, choose a certified road race instead — check the standards with our Good For Age tool.

How do I get to Speyside for the Dramathon?

The race is based around Aberlour and Dufftown in Moray Speyside. Fly into Inverness Airport (about 30 minutes from Speyside) or Aberdeen Airport (around an hour from Elgin), then take a ScotRail train to Elgin or Keith and continue by local bus (Service 36 links Elgin, Craigellachie, Aberlour and Dufftown). Book accommodation in Aberlour, Dufftown or Elgin early — this is a small whisky town and beds fill up on race weekend.
