What to Prepare: Early October on the Lake Michigan shore is prime marathon weather — usually around 50 degrees F (10 degrees C) at the start and warming only modestly by midday. The lakefront breeze is the variable: it can feel sharp on the exposed Hoan Bridge and along the open shoreline, so plan a throwaway top and gloves for the start, then race in a singlet or short-sleeve. Check the wind forecast the week before, since an east wind off the lake changes how the bridge and final miles feel.

Wind at 24 km/h can affect your marathon pace by 5-15 seconds per kilometer. Headwinds slow you down exponentially — a 20 km/h wind costs more than twice a 10 km/h wind.

| Profile | A genuinely scenic course that the race redesigned in 2023 after roughly fifty years of running point-to-point from Grafton. The current route starts downtown at the Baird Center on West Wisconsin Avenue and finishes at Urban Park on the Summerfest grounds (Henry Maier Festival Park) on the lake. Its signature feature is the Hoan Bridge: runners climb the 130-foot-high span twice, near mile 7.5 and again near mile 23.5, for sweeping views of the Milwaukee skyline, the harbor and Lake Michigan that no other day of the year allows on foot. More than 40 percent of the course runs alongside Lake Michigan, and the first half carries rolling hills while the back half trends mostly downhill, which makes it a relatively fast finish despite the bridge climbs. Total gain is roughly 626 feet on paved city and lakefront streets. It is USATF-certified and a Boston qualifier — recent fields see only about 3 to 5 percent of finishers run a BQ time, so it rewards runners who pace the early rollers and the second bridge sensibly rather than expecting a dead-flat track. As Wisconsin's largest marathon it carries a real local-championship feel, and the course has been reworked in recent editions, so confirm the current map before race day. |

Use Calculator →The full marathon is on Sunday, October 4, 2026, the 44th edition of the race, with a 7:00 a.m. Central Time start downtown at the Baird Center on West Wisconsin Avenue. The race weekend runs October 3-4, with the expo and 5K on Saturday. Plan to use the indoor pre-race waiting area near the start, since an October morning on the lakefront can be cold.
It is a lakefront point-to-point that starts downtown at the Baird Center and finishes at Urban Park on the Summerfest grounds. The headline feature is the Hoan Bridge, which runners cross twice — near mile 7.5 and again near mile 23.5 — for views of Lake Michigan and the Milwaukee skyline you cannot get on foot any other day. More than 40 percent of the route hugs the lake. The first half has rolling hills and the back half trends mostly downhill, so it finishes faster than the bridge climbs suggest. The course was redesigned in 2023, so check the official map before race day.
Yes. The course is USATF-certified and a Boston-qualifying race, so a qualifying time here counts toward Boston Marathon entry. Recent fields have seen roughly 3 to 5 percent of finishers run a BQ, which reflects a course that rolls and includes two bridge climbs rather than a pure net-downhill track. Run the early rollers and the second Hoan Bridge with discipline and the mostly-downhill back half can deliver a strong time. Check your target with the Boston qualifying calculator.
Not quite. It used to be famously flat and fast when it ran point-to-point from Grafton, but the redesigned downtown course adds the Hoan Bridge twice and rolling hills in the first half, for about 626 feet of total climbing. The trade-off is real scenery and a back half that trends downhill, so it still runs reasonably fast. Use the pace calculator to set splits that respect the early rollers and the late bridge.
The full marathon has a 6.5-hour course limit, with a 1:30 p.m. finish cutoff from the 7:00 a.m. start. There are intermediate cutoffs on course — runners must reach the Hoan Bridge by 9:15 a.m. and hold roughly a 14:42 per-mile pace by mile 23.5. Runners behind the cutoffs are offered a ride to the finish and recorded as a DNF, so build a realistic plan with the race time predictor.
Registration is online only through the official Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon site; there is no lottery and no race-day registration. The full marathon is capped at 2,500 runners (the half at 3,500), and entry stays open until the cap is reached or about October 1, whichever comes first. Prices rise as race day approaches, so registering early saves money. The event is produced by the nonprofit running club Badgerland Striders.
It is Wisconsin's largest marathon. The full marathon drew about 1,592 finishers in 2025 and 1,586 in 2024, against a 2,500 cap, so it is a mid-sized regional race with a community, club-run feel rather than a big-city spectacle. Crowd support is strongest downtown at the start and finish and around the Summerfest grounds, with quieter, wind-exposed stretches along the open lakefront.
