Wind at 15.5 km/h can affect your marathon pace by 5-15 seconds per kilometer. Headwinds slow you down exponentially — a 20 km/h wind costs more than twice a 10 km/h wind.

Use Calculator →The 11th Mito Komon Manyu Marathon is held on Sunday, October 25, 2026, with a 9:00 AM start. It is a loop course through central Mito City in Ibaraki Prefecture, starting near the Minami-machi intersection and finishing by the Ibaraki Prefectural Government building, winding past the famous Kairakuen garden, the Art Tower Mito and the wooded shore of Lake Senba.
There is no lottery: entry is first-come, first-served, so the 10,000 full-marathon places can fill before the deadline. Resident pre-entry opens in mid-April and general entry runs from late April through the end of June via the official site and RUNNET. The standard full-marathon entry fee is 10,000 yen. Set a realistic target before you sign up with our race time predictor.
The time limit is 6 hours (gross), with staged checkpoints along the way — for example the 9.5 km point closes at 1:40 and the 38.5 km point at 5:30. Six hours is a touch firmer than the most relaxed Japanese races, but the flat, fast layout makes Mito a popular first marathon. Plan even pacing with our pace calculator so you stay ahead of the cutoffs.
Yes. The course is certified by the Japan Association of Athletics Federations (JAAF / 日本陸連公認) and is World Athletics certified, so an official chip time counts toward Boston Marathon qualifying if you meet your age-group standard. Check where you stand with our Boston qualifying calculator.
The race is themed around Mito Komon (Tokugawa Mitsukuni), the region's beloved historical lord, and the route showcases Mito's landmarks: Kairakuen, one of Japan's three great gardens, the Art Tower Mito and the autumn foliage around Lake Senba. A highlight near the finish is the lakeside cheering tunnel, where local students line the road to roar runners home.
Many nationalities (US, UK, EU, Australia and others) can enter Japan visa-free for short tourist stays; confirm your own nationality's rule before booking. Japan does not currently require an ESTA or eTA. Mito is about 70-80 minutes from Tokyo by limited express train, so a race-weekend trip is easy to arrange.
Late October in northern Kanto is comfortable autumn running weather, often 14-18C at the start and warming into the low 20s by midday, with a modest chance of rain. Pack a throwaway layer for the start line and a light cap in case a shower blows through along the lake.
