Best Marathons for a PR 2026: 67 Fast Courses Worldwide
Stuck out of London, NYC or Berlin ballots? 67 fast courses for your PR — most open-registration, from Valencia to Houston to Bangkok.
Many of the world's most famous marathons are lottery majors — London, NYC, Berlin, Chicago — where acceptance odds run anywhere from roughly 3% (London ballot) to 33% (Chicago 2025), and most PR-chasers spend a year on the sideline waiting. This list takes a different angle: 67 fast courses, the vast majority open for direct registration today — no lottery wall. Valencia, Houston, and Amsterdam in particular are widely considered the fastest open-entry marathons on Earth, producing thousands of sub-3 finishes per year. Use our PR Prediction Calculator to estimate your realistic next PB based on your race history, then pick a date from the list below. For race-day footwear at PR pace, our carbon-plate spec match filters the latest super shoes by your weight and stride preferences. Chasing a Boston qualifier specifically? Frequently Asked Questions
What is the fastest marathon you can enter without a lottery?
Valencia is the answer most experienced runners agree on. The December race runs the world's fastest open-entry course (15 m elevation, cool 8-12 °C average), produces more sub-3:00 finishes per capita than any major, and has registered over 5,000 sub-3 finishers each year from 2023-2025 — three consecutive cycles. Entry is first-come, first-served until cap, not a lottery. Berlin is famously fast (it held the men's world record for years before Kiptum's 2:00:35 at Chicago 2023 and Sawe's 1:59:30 at London 2026) but its lottery is heavily oversubscribed, which is why this list excludes it. For US-based runners, Houston Marathon (January, 20 m elevation) is the closest equivalent — open registration, certified course, cool winter weather.
Does a flat course really make that much difference?
Yes. Research by Minetti et al. shows that elevation gain costs approximately 15 seconds per meter of climbing per mile. A course with 300m of elevation (like New York) can cost 5-8 minutes compared to a flat course like Berlin (20m). Use our Grade Adjusted Pace Calculator to quantify the impact.
What weather is best for a fast marathon?
Studies show optimal marathon performance occurs between 7-12°C (45-54°F) with low humidity. Dew point below 50°F is ideal. Use our Dew Point Calculator and Weather Score Calculator to evaluate race-day conditions.
How much faster can I run on a PR course vs a hilly course?
Typically 3-10 minutes faster depending on the elevation difference. For example, switching from New York (~300m gain) to Berlin (~20m) could save 5-8 minutes for a 3:30 marathoner. Use our Elevation Profile Analyzer to compare.
Should I run negative splits for a PR attempt?
Yes, research strongly supports even or slight negative splits for optimal marathon performance. Running the second half 1-2 minutes faster than the first half maximizes glycogen utilization. Plan your splits with our Negative Split Planner.
