Wind Impact on Race Day

Wind at 21 km/h can affect your marathon pace by 5-15 seconds per kilometer. Headwinds slow you down exponentially — a 20 km/h wind costs more than twice a 10 km/h wind.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you enter the Lakeland Trails Coniston Marathon?

Entry is open / first-come through the official Lakeland Trails entries portal - there is no lottery. The full marathon entry was £54 for 2026 (with discounted under-25 places). The 2027 date is listed as provisionally 6 June 2027 on the organiser's site, so registration opens once that date is confirmed; book early as fields are capped to protect the footpaths.

How much climbing is in the Coniston Marathon?

The course has roughly +867m (about 2,844 ft) of total ascent, taking in the beauty spot of Tarn Hows and the elevated Beacon Tarn before completing a full loop of Coniston Water. It is a hilly trail route, not a flat road race, so expect to walk the steeper climbs and budget extra time versus a road marathon.

Is the Coniston Marathon a Boston qualifier?

No. This is a trail marathon on footpaths and bridleways, and GPS recordings of the loop vary between 40.4 and 42km - it is not a USATF/road-certified 42.195km course, so times cannot be used for Boston qualifying. Run it for the scenery and the challenge rather than a qualifying time.

What is the course like and how hard is it?

It is a complete circuit of Coniston Water on hard-packed scenic trails with occasional muddy sections, climbing over Tarn Hows and Beacon Tarn for panoramic views of the Old Man of Coniston, Swirl How, Wetherlam and Dow Crags. Runner's World has called it one of the most scenic trail marathons in Britain. The combination of +867m of climb and uneven trail underfoot makes it noticeably harder than a road 42km.

What is the time limit?

The organiser runs the marathon in waves with different limits: the competitive Marathon Race (the first wave, starting at 9:00 AM) has a 6-hour limit, while the earlier-starting Marathon Challenge waves allow up to 7 or 8 hours. If you are a steadier trail runner, choose a Challenge wave for the more generous cut-off.

What should I wear and carry?

Wear trail shoes with good grip - the route mixes hard-packed paths with muddy patches - and carry a light waterproof, as Lake District weather turns quickly even in June (averaging 13°C / 55°F with a 33% chance of rain). Aid stations are provided around the loop, but a small soft flask or pack is sensible on the exposed, climbing sections.

How do I get to Coniston?

Coniston is a Lake District village in Cumbria, north-west England. The nearest mainline rail stations are Windermere and Ulverston, with onward bus or taxi; the closest airports are Manchester (MAN) about 2-2.5 hours by car, and Liverpool (LPL). There is no rail station in Coniston itself, so most runners drive or arrange local transfers - book accommodation in or near the village well ahead as it is small.
