What to Prepare: April in Vienna is unpredictable: the 2025 edition was cold enough that organizers noted runners set a finisher record “despite cold temperatures.” Pack arm sleeves and a throwaway layer for the corral, and don’t over-dress — you’ll warm up fast once moving.

Wind at 19.3 km/h can affect your marathon pace by 5-15 seconds per kilometer. Headwinds slow you down exponentially — a 20 km/h wind costs more than twice a 10 km/h wind.

| Elevation Gain | 110m |
| Terrain | Smooth Vienna city asphalt the whole way: wide boulevards, the Danube crossings and the imperial Ringstrasse. No trails, no cobbles to speak of, fully closed roads. |
| Profile | Only about 110m of total elevation gain and a maximum elevation difference of roughly 44m make this one of Europe’s fastest marathons. The route starts at the Reichsbrücke by the Vienna International Centre and finishes on the grand Ringstrasse between the Burgtheater and Rathausplatz (City Hall) — a true point-to-point, so you finish far from where you start. |

Use Calculator →The Vienna City Marathon 2027 is on Sunday, April 18, 2027, with a wave start from 09:00. Registration opened April 19, 2026 on the official site (vienna-marathon.com) and is first-come, first-served — no lottery. The marathon-only entry fee is EUR155; popular waves and the lowest price tiers sell out as the date approaches, so register early.
Yes. The course has only about 110m of total elevation gain and a maximum elevation difference of roughly 44m, making it one of the fastest marathons in Europe. It carries a World Athletics Elite Label and is AIMS-certified, so it draws a deep elite field and plenty of PR-chasers. The 2025 race saw a record 9,286 marathon finishers.
Yes. The Boston Athletic Association accepts any course certified by a recognized body, and Vienna is AIMS-certified, so a finishing time that meets your age-group standard counts as a Boston qualifier. You still have to run your BQ time on the day — certification only makes the result eligible.
It is a point-to-point course, not a loop. You start at the Reichsbrücke beside the Vienna International Centre on Wagramer Straße, cross the Danube, and finish on the imperial Ringstrasse between the Burgtheater and Rathausplatz (City Hall). Because the start and finish are in different places, plan your bag drop and post-race meet-up accordingly.
The course closes at 15:30 (3:30 pm). With the 09:00 wave start, that gives a generous limit of about 6.5 hours gun-to-close, comfortable for first-timers and walk-run finishers. Aid stations and timing mats follow the same schedule, so stay ahead of the closing pace to keep an official result.
Expect a cool spring morning, roughly 7-13°C (45-55°F) at the start, warming into the mid-teens, with humidity near 65% and a real chance of wind or showers on the open Ringstrasse. The 2025 edition was notably cold. Arm sleeves, gloves and a throwaway top layer for the corral work well — you will shed them quickly once running.
Fly into Vienna International Airport (VIE), a 16-minute City Airport Train (CAT) or S-Bahn ride to the centre; it is a major hub with direct flights across Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Vienna is in the Schengen Area, so check your nationality’s rules — visa-exempt travellers (e.g. US, UK, Japan) will likely need the new EU ETIAS travel authorization for 2027, while many other nationalities need a Schengen visa. The official registration page has a full English version, so signing up is straightforward.
