Canada's flagship and its de facto national championship — a World Athletics Elite Label race on a flat, fast course where most Canadian records fall. No Major, but the country's premier shot at the clock.
A top-ranked destination marathon on a point-to-point coastal route past mountains, beaches and the Stanley Park seawall. You run this one for the Pacific scenery as much as the time.

Canada's marathon calendar runs in two clear waves. Spring and early summer bring the prairie and coastal races — BMO Vancouver, Ottawa, Calgary, Mississauga, Saskatchewan in Saskatoon and Manitoba in Winnipeg — when the weather is mild and the courses are at their freshest. Use the month chips above to jump straight to your racing window, or filter the grid by course profile and BQ status.
Late summer and fall is the big-city season: Edmonton, the Marathon de Montréal, GoodLife Victoria, Niagara Falls finishing beside the falls, and the country's flagship, the TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon — a World Athletics Elite Label race that doubles as the Canadian championship and the place where most national records fall. There is no World Marathon Major on Canadian soil, so the prestige race here is fast-and-flat Toronto rather than a six-star stamp.
Several of these courses are built for the clock. Toronto Waterfront (about 40 m of total climb), Ottawa and Niagara Falls are the popular Boston-qualifier picks — pair them with the BQ race guide and check your target with the Boston Qualifying calculator. Most events open registration online months ahead, and visa-exempt visitors flying in need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), not a US-style ESTA. Each card shows a live countdown, field size and course profile, all checked against official race sources.
None — there is no Abbott World Marathon Major on Canadian soil. The headline race instead is the TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon, which carries a World Athletics Elite Label and serves as the Canadian national championship. Six-star chasers travel abroad for the Majors, but Toronto is the country's flagship for fast times.
The TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon is the largest full marathon in the country and the most prestigious, with a field of around 7,500 and a World Athletics Elite Label; it hosts most Canadian record attempts. Vancouver and Ottawa are the other big-field spring races.
There are two main windows. Spring and early summer (roughly May to June) host the coastal and prairie races — Vancouver, Ottawa, Calgary and Winnipeg — with mild, cool conditions. Late summer through fall (August to October) is the big-city season, including Montreal, Victoria, Niagara Falls and the flagship Toronto Waterfront; the crisp fall air is ideal for fast times, though coastal races can be damp and prairie events windy.
Toronto Waterfront is the standout — about 40 m of total climb, flat and fast enough to host Canadian records. Ottawa and Niagara Falls are the other popular Boston-qualifier picks. All are BQ-eligible certified courses; check your target with the Boston Qualifying calculator.
BMO Vancouver is the standout, a point-to-point route past mountains, beaches and the Stanley Park seawall, regularly ranked among the world's top destination marathons. Victoria shares the mild Pacific coast, and Niagara Falls finishes right beside the falls.
Almost all Canadian marathons are open registration, first-come, first-served — there is no London- or Tokyo-style ballot here. Toronto Waterfront, Vancouver and Ottawa open online months in advance and the most popular waves can sell out, so register early rather than waiting on a draw.
Most visa-exempt travelers flying into Canada need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), not a US-style ESTA, while travelers from many other countries need a visitor visa. Requirements depend on your nationality, so always confirm the current rules with the official Government of Canada immigration site before booking.
