| Wind | 12 km/h |
| Rain Chance | 39% |
| Typical Conditions | Mild, humid early-summer mornings on the Tsugaru Strait, typically 17-22C at the 9:00 AM start, with sea fog, a steady coastal breeze and a real chance of rain. |
What to Prepare: Late-June Hokkaido is cooler than mainland Japan but humid by the coast: race in light, breathable kit, carry a cap or visor for sun or sea fog, and pack a thin rain layer since strait showers blow through fast.

Wind at 12 km/h can affect your marathon pace by 5-15 seconds per kilometer. Headwinds slow you down exponentially — a 20 km/h wind costs more than twice a 10 km/h wind.

Use Calculator →The Hakodate Marathon 2026 is held on Sunday, June 28, 2026, with a 9:00 AM start shared by the full and half marathons. The full course starts and finishes at Chiyogadai Park Athletic Stadium in central Hakodate, looping out along the Tsugaru Strait and back through the bay area at the foot of Mount Hakodate, in southern Hokkaido.
There is no lottery: full-marathon entry is first-come, first-served, so spots can sell out well before the deadline (the 2026 full division closed early). Registration runs online only, typically from mid-February through April on the official site and RUNNET, and the full-marathon entry fee is 13,000 yen. Overseas runners can enter through the same online channels.
The time limit is 6 hours from the gun, enforced by nine cutoff checkpoints from 5 km onward, so this is a serious-runner race rather than a casual stroll. The full marathon is famously called Japan's most challenging fun run: the half is flat and fast, but the full adds constant undulations and a climb of roughly 1.5 km at about 4 percent near the 28 km mark, so pace conservatively early.
Yes. The full course is certified by the Japan Association of Athletics Federations (JAAF / 日本陸連公認) and by World Athletics, so an official chip time can be used toward a Boston Marathon qualifier, provided you meet your age-group standard. Note the rolling profile makes it a tougher course on which to chase a fast time than a flat city loop.
From the stadium the route runs through the Goryokaku district and the Nakajima Renbai market area out to the Gyobi-dori coastal road facing the Tsugaru Strait, with a turnaround near Hakodate Airport. The return passes the foot of Mount Hakodate, the red-brick warehouse bay district, the Tomoe Bridge and a loop around Midori Island near 35 km before finishing back at the stadium. The variety of city, sea and harbour scenery is the draw.
Many nationalities (US, UK, EU, Australia and others) can enter Japan visa-free for short tourist stays; confirm your own nationality's requirement before booking. Japan does not currently require an ESTA or eTA. Hakodate is reached via Hakodate Airport or the Hokkaido Shinkansen to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, making a race-weekend trip from Tokyo or Sapporo straightforward.
Late June in Hakodate is milder than mainland Japan but humid by the coast, often 17-22C at the 9:00 AM start with sea fog, a coastal breeze and a genuine chance of rain off the strait. It is generally runnable summer weather, but the humidity and exposed coastal stretches mean hydration and sun or rain protection matter.
