Wind at 10 km/h can affect your marathon pace by 5-15 seconds per kilometer. Headwinds slow you down exponentially — a 20 km/h wind costs more than twice a 10 km/h wind.

The Hangzhou Marathon is a World Athletics Gold Label event and one of China's oldest road races (founded 1987). The 2026 edition — officially the Geely Auto Hangzhou Marathon — fields 36,000 runners: 22,000 in the full marathon and 14,000 in the half. The full course starts at Huanglong Sports Center and finishes inside the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center (the "Big Lotus" stadium from the 2022 Asian Games), while the half marathon finishes at Citizen's Square.
With approximately 130 meters of total elevation gain concentrated in bridge climbs and hilly road sections, this is not a flat PB course. However, the scenic beauty is unmatched among Chinese marathons — the first half passes UNESCO World Heritage West Lake and the hilly Hupao Road area, while the second half crosses the Qiantang River via Fuxing Bridge and follows the riverside greenway to the Olympic Park. Runners describe the course character as: beautiful opening, flat middle, brutal finish.
The race launches at 7:00 AM from Huanglong Sports Center using a three-wave start system (7:00, 7:10, 7:25). Runners immediately head south onto Shuguang Road and turn right onto Baochu Road, entering the West Lake scenic zone within the first 2 km.
From km 3-10, the route follows North Mountain Road (Beishan Jie) and turns onto Yanggong Causeway — one of the three historic causeways crossing West Lake. This is the most photographed section: willow-lined paths, pagodas reflected in the lake, and dense spectator crowds. The terrain is flat but the road narrows on the causeway, so maintain positioning.
After the causeway, the route turns onto Hupao Road (Tiger Running Spring area) — a hilly section with noticeable climbing through the scenic tea-garden hills south of West Lake. This is the first real elevation challenge. The route then descends via Huyu Road and Nanfu Road onto Zhijiang Road along the Qiantang River, flattening out as the first half concludes.
The second half continues along Zhijiang Road before turning toward Fuxing Bridge (also known as Qianjiang Fourth Bridge) — the course's signature climb. This double-deck bridge crossing the Qiantang River gains approximately 15 meters over its approach. The ascent is on the bridge's upper deck with clear sightlines ahead. After crossing, runners fold back via Shidai Avenue.
The route then enters Wentao Road along the south bank of the Qiantang River — a wide, exposed riverside path also known as the "Cherry Blossom Running Path." Spectator density drops significantly here, and headwinds off the river are common. This flat section is mentally challenging due to its open monotony, but the dedicated blue running surface and kilometer markers help maintain rhythm.
The final stretch follows the riverside greenway toward the Olympic Sports Center. The 2025 edition eliminated a tunnel section that previously required two U-turns, saving runners approximately 10 seconds. The finish inside the "Big Lotus" Asian Games stadium provides a spectacular backdrop. Use our Negative Split Planner to prepare for the back-loaded difficulty.
The Hangzhou Marathon rewards conservative pacing in the first half. The scenic West Lake section tempts runners to push pace, but the bridge climb and exposed riverside in the second half punish early overexertion.
Pacing plan: Aim for 5-10 seconds per km slower than goal pace through the West Lake section. Bank nothing. The Hupao Road hills should feel manageable; if they don't, you went out too fast. Hold steady through the flat Zhijiang Road section, attack Fuxing Bridge with even effort, then maintain focus through the long Wentao Road riverside stretch.
Weather: Early November in Hangzhou averages 10-22°C with moderate humidity (70%). Morning mist around West Lake typically burns off by 8:30 AM. The riverside section can feel colder due to wind exposure — arm sleeves are recommended for the first hour. Check race morning conditions with our Weather Score Calculator.
Aid stations: Stations are placed approximately every 2.5 km along the course. Water and sports drinks are available at all stations; energy gels are provided at multiple points in the second half. The riverside stretch has reliable station spacing, so carrying personal nutrition is optional.

Use Calculator →For 2026, the lottery application window runs June 23 (10:00) to July 15 (17:00), with results announced in late July — you only pay after winning a place (200 CNY full / 150 CNY half). A new second-round lottery redistributes any places left over from the first draw. Demand is fierce: the 2025 edition drew over 151,000 applicants for 36,000 places (~24% acceptance), up from 125,585 in 2024 (28.6%). To enter the full marathon you need a verified offline race result — at least one full marathon or two halves within 24 months of the deadline (online races and screenshots are not accepted); the half marathon requires two 10K-or-longer results. Permanent-number holders (10+ Hangzhou finishes) and the top 8 of the Zhejiang Marathon points ranking skip the ballot entirely. Lottery winners then upload a medical certificate — mandatory blood pressure and ECG, dated on or after Nov 1, 2025 — before paying. Register at hm.zhetiyu.cn.
The full marathon cutoff is 6 hours 15 minutes from gun time (finish line closes at 13:15). The half marathon cutoff is 3 hours 15 minutes. Timing mats are placed at every 5 km, the half-marathon point, and turn-around points. Once a checkpoint closes, the road reopens to traffic and runners must board the sweep bus.
The course has two main elevation challenges: (1) Hupao Road in the first half — a hilly section through the tea-garden hills south of West Lake with approximately 20-25m of climbing; (2) Fuxing Bridge in the second half — a double-deck bridge crossing the Qiantang River with approximately 15m of elevation gain on a straight approach with clear sightlines. The total course elevation gain is approximately 130 meters, with most of the remaining gain distributed across gentle undulations. Note: the course has been significantly restructured since 2024, and km positions may shift slightly year to year.
The race uses a three-wave start: Wave 1 (7:00 AM) for full marathon corrals S/A/B/C; Wave 2 (7:10 AM) for full marathon corrals D/E; Wave 3 (7:25 AM) for half marathon runners. Corrals are assigned based on your submitted personal best time. Arrive at Huanglong Sports Center by 6:00 AM at the latest — road closures begin at 5:30 AM. Metro Lines 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10 offer early service starting 30 minutes ahead of normal schedule on race day.
For 2026, Hangzhou added a dedicated registration channel for overseas runners. International entrants apply through the official portal (hm.zhetiyu.cn) with a valid passport. The entry fee is 200 CNY for full marathon and 150 CNY for half marathon (same as domestic runners). Payment accepts WeChat Pay and Alipay — international credit cards can be bound to these platforms. Packet pickup requires your passport plus a printed confirmation. China offers 30-day visa-free entry for citizens of many countries; check the latest policy before booking flights.
Start (Huanglong Sports Center): Metro Line 2 to Huanglong Sports Center station (Exit B, 200m walk). Lines 3 and 10 also stop within 800m. Finish (Olympic Sports Center): Metro Line 6 to Fengqing Avenue station or Line 1 to Olympic Center station. Runners receive two free metro rides on race day. Shuttle buses also connect the finish area to key metro hubs.
The Hangzhou Marathon is nicknamed "China's Most Beautiful Marathon Course", offering a route that passes a UNESCO World Heritage site (West Lake), crosses the historic Qiantang River, and finishes in an Asian Games stadium. Unlike flat PB courses (Shanghai, Wuxi), Hangzhou's 131m elevation gain from three bridge climbs creates genuine racing challenge. The 2025 edition introduced "Ten Scenic Stages" cultural performances along the route including tai chi, guzheng music, and Song Dynasty-themed art. Plan your race strategy with our Pace Calculator.
